Exclusive?

Has anyone looked to see if the agreement was limited to the GSM version of the phone? I would be shocked if old Jobby didn't sneak that it. He loves to screw his business partners with little nuggets like that ...

Re: Exclusive?

I'm willing to bet that he tried, but that one of ATT's army of lawyers noticed that early on and re-negotiated it...

By the time this plays out, the GSM version will be necessary for the Verizon network.

See, Verizon selected LTE for its 4G offering. LTE is based off of GSM.

But it uses WCDMA for the air interface, so it won't work with existing GSM or CDMA neworks. They will BOTH need to be upgraded. LTE is not an air interface.

GSM is the back end infrastructure, not the air interface. LTE can use GSM on the back end, but WCDMA over the air, just like AT&T's current GSM uses TDMA over the air. LTE can sit on top of CDMA if the carrier wants to. Verizon has just chosen to migrate their back end to GSM. You're confusing ACCESS to the network (and handset/device management) with the technology used to divide up and utilize the over-the-air frequencies.

Read the comments at your links for a further explanation.

Re: Exclusive?

Uh no, GSM is a TDMA variant air interface.

GSM IS an air interface.

YOU are confusing back-end network topology and protocols with air-interfaces.

apple could sell an iPhone 3.5g or 4g under Verizon, depending on the wording of the contract a new version of the device might not be included in the exclusive agreement.
