sprint

I would gladly get the iPhone with Sprint. They are the only ones with good pricing and great EVDO. I reliably get 1.2-1.7 mbit with the Sprint card and pull about 700kbps on my treo.

VZ and ATT both have 3G here as well but ATT is dropped calls everywhere, and VZ is just really expensive and not as fast.

I'd rather get T-Mobile before going to Verizon Wireless or Sprint... but then again, I'm in SoCal.

AT&T has a lot of GOOD GSM coverage here, but their 3G network pathetic at best. Data may be Ok, but most calls made/recieved end up dropping for me.

T-Mobile does not really exist here. It piggybacks on ATT, and is generally considered the worst. I don't know many people that have it. It is just awful. I know TMbile is popular on the west coast, but here it is useless. It is not even considered a real cell phone operator, just something old people/kids get to make 3 calls a weeks.

the tmobile network works pretty good in the cleveland, akron Ohio market. Works very well in the chicago market. but in new york I commonly roam on dobson out there but my coverage with them is great.

That's somewhat like the general impression of Sprint out here.

T-Mobile NYC has been around for a while, but generally does not have a big presence (in some cases any presence) outside of metro city areas.
Sprint is similar, just typically rated worse for customer treatment/billing, etc.
In California/Nevada, T-Mobile has the original GSM network from PacBell Wireless, which typically functions better than AT&T's, IMHO.

To people getting tons of dropped calls on AT&T's 3G, it's probably got a LOT to do with your phone, although it may of course be ATT's crappy coverage/lack of spectrum. Per se, I have a Sony Ericsson Z750a, and I have yet to drop a call, despite the fact that I often might start a call on 3G and end it in EDGE (and this is the NYC metro area, mind you). Maybe it's the firmware, or the hardware itself, but so far, the SE phone has been great as far as voice is concerned.
Point is, it's hard to make blanket generalizations about a carrier's service, as it could very well be crappy hardware/software, as illustrated by the iPhone.

You know why T-mo is popular out here?

- Plan prices WAY cheaper than any other contract carrier. T-mo gives me over $1,000, free internet, free text, free email, free MMS, etc etc etc. on a Blackberry for $60, under which I could tether if I so chose. Verizon wants to charge twice that amount for the same features.
- Prepaid offerings (including hardware) better than any other contract carrier.
- More inclusive plan minutes.
- BlackBerry Minutes and Mail is unrivaled by ANY OTHER carrier.
- BlackBerry Internet cheaper than all other contract carriers.
- The Sidekick - which for the messaging user there is no comparison on any other network. Even the mighty LG Voyager pales in comparison (I've owned three Sidekicks and have the Voyager now. Trust me, it's not even close).
- Simplicity. Everything is clear and easy to understand, referring to their plans and feature sets. It tells you what works with what plan and what doesn't, and makes recommendations based on your device. Verizon is a nightmare to figure out and Sprint, while somewhat simple, doesn't understand how to package things properly.

All that said, I converted away from T-mo because they're starting to mob down on bills, even if you're not yet late, and even if you've been a long term paying customer who's never missed a payment in years. That, and their customer service has gone WAY down in 4 years.
