Is there any way to enable Remote Desktop Access in xp home? I've heard there are registry keys that can be changed to make it work but I want some advice from the experts here before I play with the registry. Thanks |

| The link provided is for the RDP client, not the server itself.
quote: This software package will install the client portion of Remote Desktop on any of the following operating systems: Windows 95, Windows 98 and 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000. (This is the same version of the client software as in Windows XP Service Pack 1.) When run, this software allows older Windows platforms to remotely connect to a computer running Windows XP Professional with Remote Desktop enabled.
If you need remote access to an XP Home system, you may either want to try Radmin or TightVNC.

Before anyone coughs up a false answer, Terminal Services does not exist in XP Home, so please don't say it can be done.

Please let us know where you get your information, as I would be very interested to see how a correctly set up Radmin gets hacked. You may want to go to their site and read about Radmin security as well. |

A secure, encrypted remote connection can also be achieved using UltraVNC with the encryption plugin.

| reply to Nanoprobe Running VNC or other remote access programs through a Secure Shell [SSH] tunnel solves a lot of issues like that. You can use a private/public key pair protected by a strong password for authentication. Along with verifying the host key prior to connecting a man-in-the-middle attack is extremely unlikely as is anyone hacking into the server or VNC host.

I have used Radmin in the past without any security issues, and now use VNC without any security issues.
The great advantage to VNC software is that most of it is free. |

In less than 36 hours I will have tried my linked process on an XP home machine and will have a first hand report. If it fails, I'll check the 3rd hit from Google. Well, I'm only two weeks late, but I have tried it. Single user works fine, but multi user with Ver. 2180 of temserv.dll still allows only one user at a time. Maybe my computer needs another beer, and I'll be damned if I'm gonna share mine. Maybe somebody else will debug this mofo before I get to it and tell me whre I messed up. Lemme know how yerz goez... I'll post back as the info developes....
Edit - I think you need to VLK up a copy of PRO. My local console shows the various accounts logged in, but will not accept any key keyboard input for paralell login.

All it needed was the registry entry from the Pro manual process to add the Key...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\LicensingCore

Edit - Maybe the OP only needs the client. He did not specifically say he wanted to host RDP on a home machine; that may have been an incorrect assumption of mine. Works out eiter way. -- I spent most of my money on Women and Beer, and the rest I just wasted ! |
