Can't send email

I'm changing antivirus from AVG to Avast! In doing so, I've run into a problem with sending email through my AT&T email address.

Client = Thunderbird 2.0.0.17
Settings:
Server = smtp.att.yahoo.com
Port = 465
Security and authentication:
Use name and password is checked
User name is my email address
Use secure connection = SSL.

I can send email through my 1&1 account.

When I try to send email out through this connection, I get an error that it cannot connect to the server.

Have you disabled to AV to see if that is actually the issue? If that turns out to be the problem, then one step closer to the solution.

I found this pearl of wisdom. "Thunderbird works only with the Avast Internet Mail service off."

This was another solution. If you have a software firewall, the FW needs to allow AshMaiSv.exe. Take a look at this link.

Hope some of this helps.

Avast! works with my 1&1 account. I have a feeling it is sending the 1&1 password to SBC. (No idea why, just a feeling.) I disabled outbound scans and it works fine now.

Since you disabled outbound scans then the security software doesn't like the SSL Port - it can't scan it so it just flat out denies it instead.

Avast really needs to address that.

Why are you using client side AV scanning? I've seen so many people having problems with email because the AV scanning proxy borks things. Uninstall Avast, then reinstall it, using "Custom install"; and deselect the AV email scanner. It is sufficient to have the on-access, memory resident scanner running.
