New ISP?

Newbie here... I'm guessing based on the link I followed that this is the place to talk about new ISPs.

I want a new one that's good. I've got Bell Performance now with their 7 MBPS connection... but I don't seem to get near the speeds I did with torrents or downloads like I did when I had their "high speed". With high speed, I would get up to 550 kb/s for downloads and torrents, but now... I've seen a speed of 250 max even though I should be getting closer to 775 kb/s.

Either way, what's a good one that I can use? I'll give any information that you might need to pick a good one...

- More that I don't know...

I'm personally with Velcom and I don't have a connection problem with them. All is fine, plus it's only one of the few with Teksavvy to support MLPPP which can be used to bypass the bittorrent throttling.

I notice that a lot of you guys don't advertise the big ones like Bell or Rogers. These smaller companies that you're talking about here... they all have shit speeds. They have the speed I had before I called Bell to switch to Performance. Good news is that they have unmetered bandwidth, right?

Anacac doesn't seem to be working. Any reason you guys don't recommend Bell/Rogers?

Sorry, had a few typos there. I even included the prices now.

Well, the small companies are cheaper and offer better technical support than the big giants.
For exemple: Teksavvy's is well known in this site. If you have a question or a problem, you can have answers in mere seconds from the employees.
Velcom also has employees scouring the website.

All in all, the small companies have agents that knows their site, unlike the Bell's level 1 agents.

And here's an exemple about Velcom employees browsing the site. Don't worry, they are not like that with their customers . But it's really about human to human contact not like the other giants.

And about the speeds, unfortunately, Bell is the one in control of the speed profiles. Simply, the small ISPs are wholesalers (not resellers) using Bell's DSL network to distribute the internet.

Its hardly about us providing shit speeds

We are limited to speeds provided by Bell.

Once bell provides faster connectivity then we will be sure to offer it. It's not available yet to third party ISPs (us).

That makes sense. I heard that here somewhere. You guys are just resellers.

Fair enough. I'm sure I could get a great deal on this stuff. So you guys recommend teksavvy?

Resellers would mean they simply resell Sympatico. They are wholesalers.

It's like Ontario gas using the Embridge infrastructure to distribute the gas. The gas is not from embridge but Ontario Gas.
They have their own routers, transit routes...

Wait a sec....I thought gas was all distributed by Enbridge/Union Gas and just marketed by a gas marketer (ex. Direct Energy)?

If so, bad example That's a pure resale solution.

Lol, Direct Energy only resales it, true.

Ok, it's like Alaska using the BC pipelines to get it to the US. The oil is from Alaska but using BC's pipelines.

But I think you get the idea They don't resale Sympatico, they only use Bell's Ontario/Québec DSL network.

Another aspect to consider is your payment arrangements.

For example, when i was with TekSavvy i paid using postal
money orders on a quarterly basis and now VelCom allows
me to do the same. One must realize that there always are
additional costs associated with a payment which are due
to the banking institution, post office, whichever... and it's
got nothing to do with your ISP himself but there are ways
to limit that extra expense.

Some of the smaller ISPs have figured out a loophole in Bell's position, by allowing users to bond multiple DSL lines for faster aggregate bandwidth. If you're in a location that qualifies for 5 meg service, you can get two lines and get 10/1.6 for a reasonable price (comparatively), and more upstream than Bell will give you.
