| NIS 2009 idle quick scan question
 scan history |
Greetings, just installed NIS 2009 and have live auto-update and idle quick scan on set for 180 mins. The computer is on 24/7 and used approx 5 hours each day.
This is my understanding how idle quick scan works, 1. idle quick scan runs when following full definition update every 8 hours. 2. full system scan once every 7 days.
The question I have is my idle quick scan runs 2/3 times a day and full system scan runs almost every other or twice a day, is this normal? BTW, during full system scan is running during idle and the system becomes active, the scan will be suspended until the system enters an idle state again at which time the scan will continue from where it left off which does not happen in my case, it keeps on scanning.
Thanks =)

For NIS 2009, quick scans are set to run via idle scanner every 3 days while full system scans are set to run via Idle scanner every 7 days. If at the scheduled time the system is not considered to meet idle requirements, the scan in question will run as soon as the system becomes idle. If a quick scan is running during idle and the system becomes active it will continue to run until completed. However, if a full system scan is running during idle and the system becomes active, the scan will be suspended until the system enters an idle state again at which time the scan will continue from where it left off.

Quick Scan is supposed to run when the machine goes idle following full defination update, currently full definations are updated every 8 hours. If for some reason the machine does not go idle after a defination update, the idle quick scan will run after 3 days even if the system is not idle. NIS 2009 does not provide the ablilty to change the schedule for any of the idle time tasks. Hope this answers your question. |

| How did you get so lucky? I have NIS 2009 and Quick Idle Time scans run about twice a day. I've had only one Full Idle Time scan run since I've installed NIS 2009. It's been 12 days since the first and last Full Idle Time scan ran. I've posted this on the Norton forum, and so far no one can say why this is happening.
I have cable HSI connection. My computer is on all day. It sits idle about for 2 to 3 hours in the day, and most of the evening. There should be more than one Full Idle Time scan in 12 days. |

| reply to galileo757 I just had a look at mine it has been performing the idle time quick scan on average 2 times/day and the full every 7 days. I have not noticed it happening so either I just haven't run into it or it stops on system use. Either way it has not disturbed me. |

I know I can set up a scheduled full system scan, but I'm trying to find out why the Full System Idle Time Scan won't run. I talked with Symantec tech support today, and they couldn't tell why it's not running. It supposed to run as soon as the computer is at an idle state. The Quick Scan Idle Time Scan runs several times a day when the computer is idle. I have the Full System Idle Time Scan set to run weekly, and it's been 13 days since it last ran. |

Did the NIS 2009 re-install fix your issue? Hello galileo757. First I want to apologize for hijacking your thread. Sorry, I didn't mean to do that.
By live auto-update, I take it you mean LiveUpdate on automatic, correct? If that is what you mean, then yes, it is on automatic, and I have run a manual LiveUpdate. No, the uninstall/reinstall did not fix the problem. The computer has been on since 10AM this morning. It is now 2:25PM It's been sitting idle for about 2 hours. There has been three Quick Idle Time scans during that time, but no Full Idle Time scan.
EDIT.........I have a screensaver running. That shouldn't affect anything, correct? If the screensaver doesn't keep the Quick Idle Time scan running, it shouldn't affect the Full Idle Time scan. I guess I'm just grasping at straws. I try to think of anything that could cause this problem. |

| No worries boots on the thread hijacking, not that big of a issue on NIS 2009 performing to many full system scans for moi, hopefully your issue has a solution. I have my screensaver on which does not inhibit the full system scan. Looking at my smart firewall trust control, it's allowing 3 symantic programs internet access, HSloader, OCSCTI, and CLTLMH.exe My best guess since you have tried the re-install is another software program conflicting with NIS, its good that your idle quick scan works. =) Have you tried change to a schedule daily full system scan from current setting of when at idle and see if NIS pickups on on this? |

I have those three symantec programs listed in the NIS firewall also. When I attempt to schedule a full system scan, I get a pop up stating that if I schedule a full system scan, the Idle Time scan will no longer function. |

On 10-07-2008 with NIS 2009 quick idle scan on, 3 quick idle scans and 3 full system scans in the same day, computer will be fully protected from viruses 24/7 and hopefully the HD is still working until NIS 20010 is available...lol |

Maybe that's why the full system idle scans are not running on my computer. You're hogging them all. |
