[CATV] Insight Digital 4.0 - New HD Channels Announced

Insight has launched it's Insight Digital 4.0 Website (»www.insightdigital40.com). From here, you can get a listing of the HD channels coming to your area. For Bowling Green, our lineup will now include the following:

A&E HD (new)
ABC HD
AMC HD (new)
Animal Planet HD
Big Ten HD (new)
Bravo HD (new)
CBS HD
Cinemax HD (new)
CNBC HD+ (new)
CNN HD (new)
Discovery HD
ESPN HD
ESPN2 HD
Food Network HD (new)
Fox Business HD (new)
Fox HD
Fox News HD (new)
HBO HD
HD Theater
HDNet
HDNet Movies
HGTV HD (new)
History Channel HD (new)
National Geographic HD
NBC HD
NFL HD
Palladia HD
PBS HD
Science Channel HD (new)
Sci-Fi HD (new)
Showtime HD
Special Events HD
Starz HD (new)
TBS HD
TLC HD
TNT HD
Travel HD (new)
Universal HD
USA HD (new)
WGN9-CW HD (new) - BG's local CW doesn't broadcast HD

That's 40 regular HD channels. There are also several new HD On Demand "channels":

Ambient HD On Demand
FearNet HD
HD Movies On Demand
HD Movies On Demand - Action
HD Movies On Demand - Comedy
HD Movies On Demand - Drama
HD Movies On Demand - Horror & Sci-Fi
HD Movies On Demand - Kids
HD On Demand
National Geographic HD On Demand
Sundance Channel HD On Demand

I don't personally consider On Demand choices, especially when done like this, as pure "channels", but Insight apparently does, and that brings the total up to 51 HD channels in BG (52 if you include both CBS channels in HD).

Still, I'm *very* excited about these additions. Thank you Insight for taking HD more seriously!

Re: [CATV] Insight Digital 4.0 - New HD Channels Announced

Very disappointed with the new channels that are being offered. There are so many On-Demand channels and not that many "new" HD channels. I was hoping for ESPNEWS/ESPN U, Versus/Golf and a few other non sports channels. This will definitely have me looking into other options for TV viewing. Direct TV and Dish Network is sounding pretty good right now. Lets just say if this is all that we get from Insight then I am very disappointed in them. I will keep the internet and phone but I will have to really think about keeping them as my provider for cable.

Sorry to tell you this, but I GUARANTEE you are not getting WGN9-CW down in Bowling Green - you are getting WGN America, which does NOT carry CW prog.
WGN9-CW prog is NOT cleared for national distribution outside the Chicago DMA within the rest of the US - Insight would never be able to get clearance to carry it. Insight is using the wrong logo for WGN America.

And as an ex-Insight sub, that's not a bad HD lineup. At least you guys are getting things like Travel HD, which NEITHER cc or DirecTV is carrying.

Well, that's OK by me - I never watch it anyway.

As for being disappointed by the on-demand "channels", I am too. However, I am excited that we're at least catching up in HD offerings, and that we're getting what we are.

Wow. I went from excited to bored in an instant. What a staggering waste of time. I knew the bulk of the channels wouldn't interest me, but to not add ESPNU or Versus/Golf Channel in HD really surprises me. Four news channels in HD? The thought of Obama and McCain in HD makes me queasy.

I suppose it's easier to get favorable contracts from some companies than others, but if this really is the best Insight can do, they shouldn't bother.

Not a bad selection but what happened to Spike TV ?

TVViewer

@insightbb.com
Seems like a decent lineup. I'm glad they finally added SciFi Channel HD, but I'm really surprised that they left off the Cartoon Network - I love Adult Swim. Let's hope that "by the end of the year" doesn't mean Dec 31...

shivvy

@insightbb.com

I am very disappointed to see a station like AMC HD added (which edits movies and stretches most programming that is loaded with commercials anyway) over MGM HD (which airs everything uncut and always in high def). I was really hoping that was going to make the lineup on this round. I don't really know that this listing is genuinely enough to keep me from jumping to satellite.

I just looked around a second ago, I live in Shelbyville, Kentucky and I noticed that they already have started moving channels around. The playboy channel and surrounding channels with the same theme were moved down to lower channels so hopefully they will be adding something in soon. I am personally glad to see USA HD, Scifi HD, and Science Channel HD.

I have to agree with you on this as well. I am happy to have more HD content including Starz, USA, and SciFi but I have to question the news channels?????

Plus if shivvy is correct about AMC being stretched....to me that channel will be useless just like TBS. TBSHD is the most worthless channel in our current lineup. Someone in their engineering department needs to learn ASPECT RATIO!! Bunch of tools!!!

Looks like NKY is getting the shaft, 52 HD channels where the other markets are getting 60. I have no idea why all of us in NKY are getting less than the others.

I already stated that I was disappointed, but after further review, some of the "additions" are actually funny. Ambient HD, Fearnet HD, Nat Geo HD and Sundance HD on demand are all listed as new in Louisville. They've been available since got the HD/DVR box a month ago. So how are those new? I won't even bother trying to figure out these on demand options constitute seperate channels.

I don't mean to sound like an ingrate, these additions are better than nothing and most are free, but it seems Insight could have done a better job of selecting new HD offerings that would appeal to more people. I can't imagine the likes of the Weather Channel, Versus or ESPNU are asking too much to have their HD channels placed on Insight. Oh well.

Re: [CATV] Insight Digital 4.0 - New HD Channels Announced

As I've said, I don't like the addition of on demand "channels". That's just a way to pad the totals and shouldn't, IMHO, count.

I'm also curious as to how they came up with the total numbers. In Bowling Green, Columbus, and Louisville, it says "Up to 60". In Evansville, it's 59. In Lexington, it's 56 (no Big Ten HD or WGN9CW). In Northern KY, it's 52 (no Big Ten, Bravo HD, CNBC HD+ or Fox Biz HD). However, in Bowling Green, I can only count 52 HD channels. I'd be interested to know the math behind things.

As to the channels they added, there are some good things in there. USA HD (Monk, Psych, In Plain Sight, and Law and Order: CI in HD), Sci-Fi HD, Food Network HD (I've heard of a lot of good shows on there). Unlike everyone else apparently, I'm looking forward to the news channels in HD. I do some investing, so CNBC HD+ is one I'm glad about.

Could it be better? Absolutely.

Weather Channel HD - I'm very surprised about this one. I fully expected it to be on this list and am at a loss as to why it wasn't added.
ESPNU HD - This was only launched on August 28th, so I didn't really expect it. I expect to see it, ESPNNews, ABC Family, and Disney Channel HD when Disney renegotiates its agreement with Insight.
Versus HD - They're launching separate feeds of Versus and Golf Channel HD on December 8th. It may be that Insight wanted to wait for this to happen before adding them, and it may be in "Insight Digital 4.5" or whatever the next numbering scheme is. (BTW, Mr. Willner -- you don't haave to wait to launch a bunch of channels at once. I don't think any of us would complain if you just randomly added an HD channel here and there! =-) )

While not the greatest, we're still going to be up to about 40 HD channels, which is a vast improvement. We'll get there... eventually. =-)

Yeah for CNBC HD+, the show DEF has some hawt babes (eases the pain of loses and heightens the enjoyment of gains *grins), too bad insight 4.0 does not offer HD channels for HBO on demand.

Bigred, you're right about each market having fewer channels than the amount listed. Each market seems to be five or six under. Louisville says up to 60, but currently is at 53 even with all those alleged channels of on demand. I'm hoping that means some of the channels like Versus who get their own HD channel on December 8 will be added at that time. But I'm greedy, so I'm also hoping for the NHL Network. Yeah, that one is a pipe dream, but I can't help it.

Insight isn't taking HD seriously, no cable provider is. They have no choice, they all have to broadcast in HD by Feb. 17, 2009. It isn't like they are offering us these channels as upgrades, they are just going ahead a bit before the deadline. Realistically, they should have been offering more sooner than this anyway. If they try charging me for HD channels that come with my basic package that has to be HD by law, I won't be using Insight anymore.

Broadcasting in digital is not broadcasting in HD. You're confusing the analog to digital transition with HD.

I may be mistaken, but the February date is not to broadcast in HD, but to broadcast a digital signal. There is a difference between digital and HD. Besides, the Febuary date is strictly for over the air networks.

I was pretty sure cable providers were not required to change their broadcasting to all digital. It was only over the air transmissions that were going to change. Anything that insight does goes over a wire so they are actually offering us upgrades and not doing something because the government says they have to.

I meant to quote TBC1 too.

Does anyone know why it says "up to 52 HD channels" for the Northern Kentucky area? My count was just 46 HD channels when the new ones are added. Am I missing something here? As far as I know all of my friends who have Insight in this area have the exact same lineup.

It's that way in every market, NKY HD. Whether Insight says "up to 52" ot "up to 60," each market is 6 or 7 channels short of that mark. Maybe Insight has enough bandwidth for that many channels and will get there eventually.

I have been talking to a friend that works at Insight and they informed me that Insight Digital 4.0 is set to release in November or December. They did not have the exact date but that they are "testing" it in select markets to see how it is working. They did not mention to me other channels that they would be adding in the future. It looks like we are stuck with what we got. And I am sure hoping that it will be before December before we get these channels added.

Han Solo

@insightbb.com

Actually I am sort of impressed. I was starting to think it would be a LONG time before Insight got nearly this many additional HD channels.

My guess is that they are taking the TOP-x channels from their recent survey and adding them.

For some of the others that have fewer viewers like The Golf Channel, they will probably be added in ones and twos in the future.

Although, I thought that they were going to have to upgrade to Docsis version 3 or whatever to get they bandwidth required for so many HD channels before they could really compete with Satellite.

I thought it would be a long time before that happened and hence a long time before many HD channels showed up.

Personally, I think that they would be much better off just dropping the whole 'digital cable' thing and just keeping the traditional ANALOG for the non-HD, and using that extra bandwidth to add additional HD channels.

I can't tell the difference between the signals on 'Digital Cable', and a properly connected analog cable signal (good cable, not a dozen splitters etc).

They have to be wasting a huge amount of signal capacity by transmitting many stations THREE TIMES... take TNT, its on Analog, Digital Cable, and HD. What a waste.

ANYONE NOTICE that they are saying "FREE" if you already receive these channels. So, does that mean you can get the HD channels WITHOUT the digital cable package? I would be happy just dropping the digital cable package if I could get just the analog and HD versions of the stations I liked.

Actually, that's not quite correct. There are only 2 versions of TNT being transmitted - an analog version and an HD version. These are 2 distinct channels. Here in Bowling Green, TNT is on Channel 19 and TNT-HD is 925.

But wait, what about the one on Channel 112? The analog signal is just mapped to that number in addition to being mapped to channel 19. It's not being transmitted twice - it's just mapped to 2 channel numbers. It's not taking any additional bandwidth.

The way Insight works is that it gives you the HD version of a channel if it has an SD/digital counterpart. Right now, to get HD versions of things like TNT, ESPN, TBS, etc., you have to subscribe to the Classic Package (to get the SD version), Insight Digital 3.2 with DVR & HDTV (to get the HD version), the Digital Pack (in order to get HD channels with only a digital counterpart).

The HD Pack that Insight has (and charges $7.95/mo. for) has channels with no SD/digital counterpart: HDNet, HDNet Movies, Universal HD, HD Theatre.

The whole "FREE" thing means that none of the new channels will be going in this extra package. If it has an SD/digital counterpart (A&E, CNN, Bravo, USA, CNBC, Fox Biz, etc.), and you meet the above requirements to get HD channels in the first place, then you'll get it for free.

The only exceptions are Starz and Cinemax, and obviously you have to subscribe to those premium services to get those channels.

Hope that helps clarify things!

BZ

@united-mail.com

I understand that digital is not HD and that the digital transition is for OTA transmissions, however, doesn't Insight receive all their channels OTA?? I've seen Insight hubs that have 50 different satellites pointed in 50 different directions... so I'm assuming this is how the recieve their feeds, and then they amplify and pump those feeds out through their cables.

What I don't understand is after the February deadline, won't they be receiving all digital channels via these satellites? Why would they convert them back to analog (stripping out all the benefits of digital, like HD broadcasts) before pumping them down their cables and to our houses? Doesn't sending those analog signals to our houses eat up most of the bandwith? Why not just forward the digital signal on to their customers? Wouldn't that mean we'd get all HD shows that each particular station sends out? So instead of having to tune into the HD version of a particular station (the 9xx channels)... we could watch the regular channel (non 9xx channel number) and get HD broadcasts for programming that is in HD.

Is it the restrictions of transition? In other words, does their current hardware/configuration create limitation on what they can do and prevent this from happening? Maybe someone could shed a little light?

Re: [CATV] Insight Digital 4.0 - New HD Channels Announced

Yes, Insight receives their signals via satellites. No, this does not make them all OTA. OTA is considered what you can pick up in your house via rabbit ears. That is the only thing that is mandated by the FCC to be digital.

There's also another fatal flaw in your reasoning:

Digital ≠ HD

Just because something is transmitted in a digital format does not mean that it's necessarily in High Definition.

Gotcha.. and I know digital doesn't equal HD, but HD broadcasts can only come in over a digital signal. I was just trying to figure out why they're doing what they're doing. If they're receiving a digital signal for a station (say WGN), why don't they just forward the digital signal to us instead of an analog signal? I'm in Louisville, so WGN is channel 20. Right now it comes in as an analog signal... why can't they just send us the digital signal mapped to channel 20... then when an old rerun or newscast comes on it would be your typical SD, but when something like a Cubs or White Sox game comes on (or anything broadcast in HD), we would get it in HD.

Seems reasonable and they wouldn't be eating up all that bandwith by sending out 70 channels as analog signals. I do understand that your TV would either have to have a QAM tuner or you'd have to have a set top box... but I don't think that would upset too many customers if every channel they got was digital and had the capabilities of carrying a HD broadcast.

Chronob

Re: [CATV] Insight Digital 4.0 - New HD Channels Announced

If they broadcast every channel in digital then every customer would need a cable box on every tv in their homes, or newer TVs with QAM tuners for the unencrypted channels.

Or a converter box... which is already being pushed onto everyone using an anteanna. Why not push it on people with cable too? There's models out there with QAM tuners that aren't much more expensive than the ATSC-only converters.

As part of the FCC digital migration plan, Cable companies are required to provide analog signals for until 2012 for local stations. They can move all the rest to digital if they want but I believe the locals are required to be carried as analog on the cable as well as digital/HD QAM passthrough.

It looks like Insight has signed a deal with Disney that will allow it to add ESPNU and the Disney Channel in HD. ESPNEWS will also be added in certain markets

That is good news. Now if we can get the Golf Network before the new golf season starts that would be great.
