| Vonage portability with AT&T DSL
I am currently helping a family member possibly switch over to Vonage home phone service. They have AT&T DSL internet service and this will be the backbone for the Vonage service. In the past, getting VoIP on a DSL line didn't really make sense cause it was sort of a catch 22; if you got rid of your landline to switch over Vonage, you would also lose your DSL. AT&T didn't allow you to have DSL without a land line.
However, AT&T now offers DSL without having their landline phone service ($5 more/month). This "naked" DSL is referred to as "FastAccess DSL Direct". So we are trying Vonage and their $14.99 plan since my family member doesn't use the phone all that much. Vonage is free for the first 30 days. We are trying it with a Vonage assigned phone number for now & so far its been working great.
My question is this though. how should I go about porting their number over from AT&T to the Vonage account? Am I gonna run into major headaches? Vonage said they can handle it, but I am concerned that when Vonage puts in the request to port over the number, AT&T might just cancel the entire account all together (phone and DSL) once the number leaves AT&T's network to go to Vonage's network. Which of course would then lead to not having phone service all together. I wouldn't be surprised if AT&T makes it difficult to port the number over since they have no incesntive to do it easy and are essentially losing your business along the way.
Or will I have to just do it this way, but then call AT&T back to have them reconnect or resestablish us with "naked" DSL? Just curious so I can avoid as little headaches as possible when the time comes to porting the number over. |

-Call Vonage and initiate a number transfer.
-Call AT&T to separate your dsl and phoneline by getting dryloop service. Get a confirmation number.
-Then call Vonage to provide it. |

| reply to mcf57 Yea, ordering a 2nd DSL line makes more sense to me and seems like less headaches. I've done it and it was relatively painless. I thought I was gonna get more resistance, but luckily not. The new DSL line is scheduled to be installed 10/13/08. Hopefully all goes well.
Let me ask this too then. My family member used to have a 2nd phone line that was used for a fax line. It has been disconnected for several years now, but the wiring is still in place. There is basically one jack in their office location and it has two outlets. One is for the current DSL & phone line and the other one is free. I think AT&T is gonna hook up the new DSL line on the old fax line. Hopefully they do at least.
Anyway, if this winds up being the case, can I then use the old/current set of phone jacks to somehow connect the vonage line to so telephones can easily be used throughout the house? I realize that the old line needs to be disconnected from the box on the outside of the house. Will each DSL line have its own RJ11 connection out there or will they probably run both DSL lines through one set of RJ11 jacks? |

| yes, you should be able to do that. be sure that the line cord from the Vonage adapter to the selected wall jack has only two conductors (red and green, center pins). if you want a phone in that room, you can use a T-adapter (or 2 line splitter) plugged into the Vonage box with separate line cords 1 to the phone and the other to the wall jack. |
