Strong signal but no internet

My 595 card is in a Linksys 3G-ST router and connected to a yagi antenna
I get 80-100% signal (-74 - -76db)
I have only one servicing tower 2.7 miles away.

Several times a day I lose all internet connectivity, altho my signal stays strong.
I reset, reboot, try the connection manager in my laptop, but nothing works except time...anywhere from 5-40 minutes, before connectivity returns

Any ideas?
Thanks, Barry

Sounds Like a tower issue. I would call Sprint and start a trouble ticket

I've seen the same thing 3 or 4 times in the last 2 weeks. Everything looks normal but either can't access the internet or it runs at sub-speed and everything times out. Nothing I do on my end cures it but if I wait 10 to 20 minutes it corrects itself.

I really believe something is wrong with Sprints connections to the internet. With good signals and speed tests websites load slowly. Data transfer rate is like 7 Kb/sec yet speed test reports 800 to 1 meg.

I also have been noticing rather erratic performance in the last two weeks or so. Sometimes my CDU will show solid red in the signal LED, meaning no signal. Unplugging the antenna or the USB cable will usually re-enable things. Also, I setup an experiment using a spare computer to host the CDU instead of the MBR router I normally use, and I could not get the connection to stay connected overnight. It got dumped and didn't reconnect, but I think that in order to do that you have to set the "GO when ready option" to 'on.' But whether it's in the computer or the router, I've been seeing more red on the sig LED than normal these last two weeks.

*whew* I thought I was the only one.

The past 2 weeks have been absolute hell trying to connect; I'll be browsing along, and all of a sudden my light will go dead...then flash red, then come back solid green, but it won't complete authentication (I too am in an area were I have excellent signal coverage and strength). It's a little better when my card is in my laptop, but when it's in the router, it's truly horrendous.

I don't know what's going on, but it's truly a big head-ache.

couple this with the fact that ever since last year I haven't been able to get my regular 1280 kilobits down and 400-500 kilobits up (with a consistent 100-115 ms latency to Google), and I am not a very happy customer. I've tried and tried to tell Sprint there's something wrong with the tower. I have no idea what it is, but I'm fairly sure something is not quite right (even at 3-4AM, I still am stuck at 800 kilobits per second down, and 200-300 kilobits up...with 140-150 ms to Google). I realize there are several people in my area who have EVDO, but I doubt they're downloading and uploading 24/7.

Of late, I've been able to hit, at less busy times, 1 megabit...so who knows what's going on now; it's maddening at times.

My 595 air card is in the Linksys 3G-ST router as well. I am in Orland Park Illinois. To get the internet back, I tried pushing the button on the router to turn off the air card then back on. Some times that works, I also tried unplug the power cord to the router as well. But then Sprint could be the problem in the first place.

Another thing I have noticed about my CDU/MBR combo: sometimes it fails to find a signal (red led on steady) and only by unplugging the power to the MBR router does it re-connect. It seems like the CDU goes into some sort of 'crashed' state that can only be released by a power-down reboot of it and the router.

Glad I'm not alone with intermittent connection issues.

Using a Sierra 597U with a Millennicom account, I too have noticed a strong - 80% - signal but no data is flowing. I have the 597U connected to a spare computer with the lan port connected to the "WAN" on a regular wireless router. If I remote desktop to the wireless host and open the ##DEBUG screen, I see the HDR Session State go from "state open" to "mngmt protocol setup" then briefly to "AT" something before going back to "state open". While it's showing "mgmnt protocol setup" I get no internet on any of the connected computers. However, if I open iTunes on one of the computers and go to a low bitrate (16kbps usually) radio station, I stay connected for hours at a time with no drop outs.

Today 10/13/2008 it happened to me.. Al of sudden 4PM my signal drops from 100 to 20% Yahoo fails to load after 25 seconds. Luckily DSLreports loaded up. Signal says 20 % & 102dbM/ I didn't go over this month.. have Aircard 595U? about 2 years old. BTW how do you know when its time to replace the battery in one of these things? It is kinda warm when I take it out of the cradle. Where can you get the battery for this thing? Only at the Sprint store? I am 40 miles away from there.
Thanks.

I am a new subscriber to Sprint, less then two weeks. I was hoping to have a better Internet experience then Hughes.net/DirecWay provides. Unfortunately from day one I have had constant connectivity issues as described here in this forum. I have a U727 EVDO, a CradelPoint CTR-350, and an external Omni antenna. I have all four bars when things are good. When they are acting up the signal strength (bars) bounce from 1-4 every few seconds.

I have had the service about two weeks now and monitoring it closely. It seems fairly consistant that from about noon until 8-8:30 PM (EST) I experience this horrible connectivty problem. Then automagically at around 8-8:30 PM it clears up and I have great performance.

So, after my second call in two weeks I was able to get a Sprint Tech Support guy to open a trouble ticket for the area. Now I wait and see if they call back or the service clears up during the 12-8 PM timeframe.

Just for interests sake, here's a snapshot of a ping to www.yahoo.com.

Not sure if any of this is helpful to anyone, but there it is.

If Sprint calls back and says everything is lovely, take a look at my site for some tweaks and tips to increase performance. Just a friendly suggestion.

They never called so I called them and asked for a manager. "Jeremy" was very professional and elevated the ticket to a larger group of engineers to look into. By 3 PM or so my connection was blazing fast, no delays, no lost packets, just perfect. It was exactly what I was expecting from the start.

If this were Direcway/Hughes.net I would still be waiting and my connection still crappy and slow.

+1 for Sprint!
