One person said it was to prevent illegal downloads.

One tech said that the speed will stay low until my download activity has decreased for an hour.
DJBuzz24 : As for the 3rd Party Company that does their network management, they're called Broadband Support. They do bandwidth management for several (mostly cable) ISP's. A SuddenStink rep once accidentally gave me their # (when he couldn't explain when/how the throttling works), but when I called it I got some 55+yr old engineer that read me the riot act (cussing me for bothering him), answered *NONE* of my questions, and even requested that I use my SuddenStink contact list to notify Upper Management that their customers were calling BBSupport to complain. He said he was "goddamned tired of hearing this stupid bullshit", and that "Suddenlink needs to get their shit together and stop passing the buck". He continued to tell me that SL "pays us to do what they don't know how to do, and when they get complaints they pass the buck to BBSupport instead of dealing with their own f*$king customers". The guy was *pissed*, so I deleted their number as soon as I got off the line. The best part is that the Tyler call center was the only call center that knew of BBSupport's throttling and network management. The Ontario and Georgia call centers had not only never heard of BBSupport, but kept reassuring me that there were no such throttles on the SL network.

They keep their techs in the dark and only allow them to dispatch techs to appease the customer. The customer gets the impression that there's a problem "farther up the chain", and as long as everyone keeps assuring them "they're working on it", the customer hangs on for months before getting fed up and jumping ship. SL also knows what markets they have cornered, and as a result don't bother spending any cash to upgrade or properly manage the network in that area, as they know the customer has no other choice for broadband.

anon : i live in Riodell Ca in humboldt and the internet suck ass, its exact ally like you and many others have said. From like 7pm to like 1am the network runns like crap and latley its been degerdated all day long.the tech support would tell me my modem needed replacing so i went in and they had me purchase this generic Ambit made in china piece of crud that runs worse then my old 1 and then i had a tech sent out and he replaced all the lines and the problem was still there.i got so pissed off that i moved to anouther house on the block and called the techs to come out and test every thing.I even monitered everything he did to make sure the tech wasn't a bumb dumb.he even hooked up a electronic device that moniters connectivaty with the office network and he told me my connection reads solid.so then i told him to watch me run some connection tests, i used speakeasy like 10 times and i did the same with speedtest.net and fronteir net {excuse my spelling} and they all showed my bandwidth bouncing like a pinyata form like 762kbps download to like 4mbps and then 6mbps then 1mbps.it was totally bullsh-- and the tech was at a loss 4 words and couldn't explain it.they even know it wasn't my modem and yet i was basicly instructed to replace my modem by there tech support line and the onsite tech established that it wasn't any of my equiptment and i alwready knew this ,i even moved to prove them rong because i knew it wasn't localized to me .i think its rediculas that every one in the area of my county should automaticly have discounted bills but hell no,they expect us to pay 60 dollars a month for internet shitter than dial up.and to the whining tech operater on these forums you choose to work 4 crooks , your a employee of suddenlink and a payed repersenative so don't act like your not a part of the company trying to pass off any responsibility because if you know that the company heads are just being greedy and are only conserned with profit mabe you need to remind them that selling people advertised bandwidth that they don't even have. Buy more bandwidth and stop routing us all over BFE . i bot my internet to play online on my ps3 and this is totally ridiculas for how much they charge this is out rite theaft.back in the day if the cable went out in a given area the cable company would automaticly credit your bill to compinsate you for the loss of service, suddenlink wants to keep your cash weather or not you got what you've payed for , they bank on the fact that most people might of been at work and didn't know it was out or the fact that most people won't sit through 30min of BS just to get the the company to credit your bill when those lazy guys rake in thousands on things like this.its rong to have a service running messed up for longer than 2 and a half months and yet still expect me to pay 60$ for crappy internet worse than highspeed dial up. i pay over 150$ in total monthly services and this is most unprofetional, i want back my good old reliable cox communications because when i had them it was never like this .fix it or i'll drop the service and report you crooks to the BBB and the FCC . I know this can't be legal , its false advertising plain and simple.suddenlink wants customers money and yet doesn't maintain there network to warrent the heafty price tag.were i live there is on other options other than sbc dsl so suddenlink pretty much owns the monopaly here. all i want is for my service to run at the speed i and all the other people in the area are paying for.

anon : The past few weeks I noticed I've gone from getting a consistent 8mb connection to about 768kb. I finally called and they sent a tech out. I spoke with 2 techs, both who said there was no throttling occurring.

The tech came out and he hooked up his laptop and got the same speed. He said the dBs were off, went outside and adjusted some stuff, came back and said they were solid. He tried his laptop again, same issue.

He then tried his test modem and it wouldn't train, so he tried another, wouldn't train. He called his dispatch, had them check out his modem, they saw nothing wrong with it. So he told them to put my modem back on, and tried it, suddenly it's working fine.

Everything is peachy, until about 5-6 hours later. I'm back to consistently getting these horrible speeds.
