| reply to impala Re: [Services] Received this in my AT&T e-mail this morning...
That is one of nine legacy domains from the SBC side of the company:
ameritech.net flash.net nvbell.net pacbell.net prodigy.net sbcglobal.net snet.net swbell.net wans.net
They are representative of the various companies that SBC bought, after they changed their name. Originally, they were one of the seven "Regional Operating Bell Companies" ("RBOCs"): "Southwestern Bell Telephone". They changed their name to just plain SBC (I am reasonably certain that CEO Ed Whitacre stated that the "SBC" had no particular acronymic meaning). Then they started buying:
RBOC Ameritech ('ameritech.net'). RBOC Pacific Telesis Group ('nvbell.net' and 'pacbell.net'). Regional LEC Southern New England Telephone Co. ('snet.net'). ISP Prodigy ('flash.net', 'prodigy.net', and 'wans.net').
My understanding of SNET is that the old AT&T had a minor stake in the company, and divested themselves of that stake before the breakup, and not under judicial pressure; so it was never considered an RBOC, or a part of the 1984 breakup under the consent decree.
SBC, and now AT&T, continue to use those domains, though they no longer issue new accounts using them.
When SBC bought AT&T, they added the AT&T domains, to the list, as well:
att.net worldnet.att.net
Ed Whitacre remained in charge of the company, changed its name from "SBC" to "AT&T", then went on to buy RBOC Bellsouth. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

My 'pacbell.net' login works here. | My 'pacbell.net' login doesn't work here. |
When I enter www.att.net, I am redirected to:
»att.my.yahoo.com/
That page will only work for migrated SBC users, and new 'at&t Yahoo! HSI' users.
I believe you should be using:
»webmail.att.net/
That redirects to:
When I try to log in with my 'pacbell.net' ID at the second page, it fails. There are a few old SBC customers, with email in the nine legacy domains, who did not migrate, and can't use the Yahoo! pages. Those customers can use the second one, same as AT&T Worldnet, and legacy Bellsouth customers. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

I had never tried to check the email. I am using the same username/password that is setup for PPPoE on the router. -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0 |

Current 'att.net' portal page. | Current 'att.my.yahoo.com' portal page. |
On the one hand, it already does. On the other hand, I don't think they will be able to access email through »mail.yahoo.com/. More likely, the portal page will retain the URL, as in the one screen shot, and the "Mail" link will go to »webmail.att.net/.
I expect that only the "Powered by Yahoo!" will be the same.
But I could still be wrong. Is this going to be the end for the old SBC holdouts who never migrated? -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |
