Edit: Using XP Home, other than seeing the NIS icon down in the tray, I would never know it's running. |

| reply to JAQUEBAUER Hi JAQUEBAUER,
This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.
Norton Internet Security 2009 should not consume many system resources at all during normal operation. The only time you should see a spike in CPU usage would be when a Full System Scan is running ( which normally happens when your computer is idle) or if Norton detects a threat while you are working.
Since Norton Internet Security is handling the firewall, make sure that you disable the Windows firewall and any other third party internet security applications to rule out software conflicts as the cause of the CPU spike.
Norton Internet Security 2009 contains a new feature called "Pulse Updates" which automatically checks for and installs new definition files in the background, every 5- 15 minutes. I would suggest that you manually click on the "Run LiveUpdate" link to ensure that you have the latest updates applied. You should then run a "Full System Scan" to check for infections.
Let me know if the scan comes back with any infections and if you still experience this issue. There are other settings in Norton Internet Security 2009 that can be changed as well.

| Thank you everyone for all for the ideas. I ended up using the Norton removal tool, then re installing NIS 2009. It is now working as advertised.....
It is very easy on system resources. It looks like a winner !
I have another observation in that upon boot up, there is no icon in the system tray indicating the Norton app is running, like there was in the NIS 2008 product. Only after starting NIS 2009 from the start menu does the tray icon appear. Is this normal behavior ????
To me, seeing that icon there reassures meNorton is running.
Again, I thank all for their feedback. |

I have the Notification icon on my system, but NIS 2009 allows to to be 'hidden' (which 2008 did not). Check the Taskbar properties and see if 'Hide Inactive Icons' is checked. I believe that if you uncheck this option you will see the NIS icon (and all others) at all times.
Alternatively, if you click on the arrow on the right side of the taskbar, it should expand and show all of the icons for a few seconds, letting you see if the NIS icon is there. |
