| Blizzard gets Warcraft bot payout
»news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7645059.stm
World of Warcraft creator Blizzard looks set to get $6m (£3.36m) from the makers of a software 'bot'.
The cash is part of a deal brokered by Blizzard and MDY Industries - the maker of the WoWGlider software 'bot.
Blizzard embarked on the case against MDY claiming that the World of Warcraft Glider software produced by the company infringed its copyright.
The Glider software lets Warcraft players automate many of the repetitive steps the game involves.
Cash call
In July US District Court Judge David Campbell ruled that the MMOGlider, as the software is now known, broke the terms of the license that players agree to when they play World of Warcraft (WoW).
The Glider software is the creation of MDY founder Michael Donnelly who is thought to have sold more than 100,000 copies of the $25 (£14) program.
It proved popular with many WoW players as it helped them automate the many repetitive tasks, such as killing monsters and scavenging loot, required to turn low level characters into more powerful ones.
Although sizeable the damages award could have been bigger, say experts, if MDY had not won some of its arguments about damages in court.
It was also helped by an admission in court that it would be reasonable to pay some form of damages.
The award could be delayed if Blizzard appeals against the judgement which threw out its claim to double or triple the cash settlement.
The case is due to go to court again in January 2009 when the remaining issues in the legal conflict look likely to be settled.
At issue will be whether MDY broke the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act and whether Mr Donnelly will have to pay the damages from his own pocket. -- I have come to realize that God doesn't want to hear from me anymore. |

| I don't get it. I am not familiar with the software itself, but did it "hack" anything in your installation, or did it function like any other addon within the confines of the blizzard API?
If it did not hack anything, why are they paying now? If it did hack, why didn't blizzard guardian process did not catch it? |

It's a cat-and-mouse game between Glider and the Warden. Glider attempts to camoflauge/hide its program, and then the Warden is adjusted to detect for the new gimmic it uses. The banning of accounts may not always be swift and immediate, but it happens once Blizz has sufficient evidence to suspect & validate an account being botted. |

| That was actually an interesting read. I never actually read the full TOS, but the exerpt posted on that is funny. Basically we won't tell you what we consider cheating, but we will ban you for it. |

| i have been to the lider web site to see what it is. what it does is you put it in an area and map out an area with mobs. it will then walk your toon around and kill things and loot them. automatically skin things that can be skinned. you cam mine and herb some things as well. it will go repair and vendor things too. it will go around that area until you stop it. that is the simple explanation of the program. |

| reply to PBX Tech I thought the program completes quests for you grinding rep maybe a slow way to level but its nice to get XP if your away from the computer .....I dont know whats the big deal about the bot program I have 3 level 70s and absolutely done with the level grind but I really want a druid this program would be nice to have, so if this bot program consider a hack what about addons like deadly boss mods and mods like that?
well I can see why people wouldn't want the program in the game kinda of unfair that some of us had to grind to level while joe on the other hand leveled using a program....like they say work smarter not harder...lmao |

| the issue comes done to the fact that they deem any program or addon that "does the work for you" as as hack/cheat.
I seem to recall that there was once an addon that would automatically fish for you too (cast, collect, re-cast, etc.) but I never heard the name of it or even if it is still around, but do know that it was deemed a hack/cheat as well. -- Cleverly Disguised As A Responsible Adult! |

| what is the big deal to get a program to fish for you? its not some type speed hack or your life and mana bar is at 99999/99999.... ohh well to bad the bot program is consider a hack/cheat....I never leveled my fishing because when I first picked it up iam like kool one fish one level up but once I got higher level and saw i needed the catch 7 or 8 fish to level up once i wanted to cram the fishing pole up blizzard ass bad enough the flight time between cities can take over 11 min and now to sit and wait for my bobble to go up and down in the water 7 or 8 time (not counting if the fish got away) just to level one time what a waste of game time...they need to make some changes
what can you do...lol |

No addon that can do that without using software outside of the game is illegal. You must be thinking of Fishing Buddy, was a very popular addon before the big 2.0 patch. |

because of spam for it, I have it set to not drop it instantly but to pick it up and hold it. This topic is ok if it stays on course. -- "If something about the human body disgusts you, complain to the manufacturer" - Lenny Bruce What this country needs is a good five dollar plasma weapon. |

| reply to PBX Tech Glad to see Blizz putting on the thumbscrews about this. The argument has gone around and around time after time, but if peeps don't wanna play then don't play - save yourself the $25 for the hack, the $40 for the software and the $15/mo for the account. Oh yeah, and save us all the difficulties in trying to farm by filling areas with bots and save the game economy but not over flooding the ah with items farmed using bots while you sleep. |

Good times. Lead them into deep water so they drown, but are far enough below the surface that they are outside of the res radius. Then report.
Sadly, not really possible on PvE realms. |
