| [Vista] Network looses Internet On Icon
Hi, After an hour +/- My network Icon states "Local Only" and I get a Rex "X" for internet. It is just cosmetic as I still have the Net but it is driving me nuts. Anyone have a workaround for this anomaly? I repair the connection and it fixes it after the second attempt every time Lee |

| I know what that is..but I am getting so damn old I forget to fast.
There is an setting {like the screen saver has a setting to start after a certain time.}
Well if I remember correctly I had your issue once and all I had to do was eliminate the security time limit for internet access.
It's like your momma..blocks out intruders after a certain set time. |

| reply to Yaco There is a similar problem being discussed on the FIOS forum. The posters there wondered if it had something to do with their FIOS Internet service. (consensus suggests it is doubtful that this is the cause)
I have same issue on three VISTA SP1 machines. One is Business, the other two are Home Premium versions. See this link: »[northeast] Odd Networking Issue Last Two Days
The problem is time dependent and strangely, despite what the icons indicate, Internet connectivity is not affected on my machines and on those of the posters on that link.
It is clearly time - related. At original boot, icons indicate local + internet, then internet indication disappears (but internet is still connected and available) . Rebooting or logging on from a different account restores the icons and then after passage of time, syndrome returns.
Microsoft has a KB on this, but it falsely suggest that this is only related to having two NICs on the machine. Posters say it is also happening on desktops with a single NIC (two of mine have only one NIC each and have the problem.)
JimmyCarter1: a security time out sounds like an interesting possible source, but I doubt that it would ONLY mess up the icon leaving the actual internet connection sound and operating. Have you found it again so we can try it as a potential solution? -- regards,

| reply to Yaco I came here looking for help and it's the first thread.
It's happening to me on an HP laptop running Vista SP1. It happens at two location ( only ones I've checked) both FIOS. However, one is using the Actiontec and I'm using a Linksys.
I just started noticing it but I can't be sure when it started or corrolate it to any particular update. |

VERY STRANGE (but nice) DEVELOPMENT:
Today, the networking icon has not lost the indicator for Internet connection. After 8 hours from boot-up, it still shows "Local and Internet".
The lost Internet indicator has been a constant problem since at least August. It ALWAYS loses the Internet part of the indicator after about 1 to 1.5 hours from boot. However today it is simply not happening.
I have not changed any thing on any computer or on anything installed on my network between yesterday till today. the only things that could have changed are an automatic Microsoft update (unlikely since the machine would have gotten any recent auto updates long before today) or an auto update of our Actiontec Router (from Verizon). I checked the Actiontec and it has a firmware image dated in November 2007, so I don't think it has been upgraded. Net Net: I do not see any change here at my end. Whatever cleared up the problem today is currently a mystery. If it is Verizon FIOS related, as some have suggested, it was done at their end, not locally. -- regards,
