Re: Comcast Oregon channels changes late 2008

Thanks for finding the notice for the Salem area, nevadabell.

I'm not particularly happy to be one of the first in the nation, but as long as they're not going to encrypt the digital EB channels, things could be worse. Plus I'd assume we're going to get DOCSIS 3.0 at the same time for HSI, which will be a nice pickup.

It certainly is nice to see progress!! It's a good move that they will include a digital converter and two digital adapters to each customer. I'm assuming if you have an HD or DVR converter, that you would only pay the difference? Who knows with Comcast.

Well it also appears that you guys are NOT going all digital ONLY, since it says limited basic will continue in analog, also. This is just like how they did it in Chicago.

I would expect that to be true for all markets that eventually go this route.

Re: Comcast Oregon channels changes late 2008

The Statesman Journal posted a FAQ from Comcast outlining the transition. Among other highlights:

1) It looks like standard/expanded basic is going the way of the dodo. It repeatedly mentions that affected customers are getting access to a bunch of channels that currently are on only Digital Starter, so presumably everyone is getting moved there (it's the same price).

2) 3 free digital adapters; 1 set top box and 2 DTAs. Comcast says there's no monthly charge, I don't know if this is a temporary thing, or 1+2 for free is being built in to all digital packages.

3) They specifically mention this as allowing faster internet services. So DOCSIS 3 is coming, we just don't know when.

Also of interest, the newspaper had the customer percentages. 75% are already digital, 10% are standard/expanded basic, and the last 15% are limited basic. So this change only really affects some 10% of their customers here.

And finally, it looks like the digital side of the transition is already done. I'll start sniffing with my HDHomeRun later and see if the the digital EB channels are indeed there and unencrypted.

That's a really well written FAQ. Can't wait until my area transitions. Hopefully I'll still be around to see it.

Alright, I've gone through the entire channel spectrum. The entire Digital Starter tier has been unencrypted. It's possible to pick up everything in that tier in digital except for the TV Guide channel, and the 4 public access channels (which were at one point in digital, and have since gone missing). The nationals are available in HD, the HD versions of the cable networks are still encrypted, however (damn).

Are they still on weird numbers, or do they line up and make sense?

That's a lot of channels in the clear..do you get PSIP data for it? Like channel name, guide data if your TV has one (mine has a rudimentary one that shows what's on at that moment).

I don't think so. I use a HDHomeRun so ultimately it pulls its data from elsewhere and I know little about PSIP as a result; but when fumbling around through one of the setup programs, it looks like any kind of significant PSIP data (e.g. a channel name) is only supplied for the national networks.
