SPTech join:2005-03-26 San Pedro, CA 1 edit | Gmail SMTP CENSORS e-mail attachments IT feels are wrong! Ok so now Gmail will censor and NOT SEND via SMTP any e-mail it deems to have an attachment IT thinks should not be sent!!!!!!!!
Man if this doesn't get you mad, then heck nothing will.
If you think this is a GOOD thing... well go back to grazing with the other sheep.
That's the last straw for me. |

SPTech join:2005-03-26 San Pedro, CA | reply to SPTech It was a zipped file too!!! Man oh man, BIG BROTHER IS HERE!
Here is the error message given from the BIG BROTHER GMAIL SMTP server...
An error occurred while sendingmail. The mail server responded:
5.7.0 Our system detected an illegal attachment on your message. 5.7.0 Please visit »mail.google.com/support/bin/answ···wer=6590 5.7.0 to review out attachment guidelines.
Please check the message and try again.
I'm done with Dslextreme now.
Good luck sheep. |

SPTech join:2005-03-26 San Pedro, CA | reply to SPTech Just a final thought... if "they", (BIG BROTHER GMAIL) are looking that closely into our "private e-mail" zipped attachments ... just think what else THEY might be snooping into!!
Maybe they will ban the usage of certain words... or maybe they do already!
All I know is Dslextreme can NOT be recommended anymore by me and my company. |

The Google platform will block certain files types/extensions that could be possible viruses. This is done for security purposes and is done by most email services to help prevent the spreading of viruses over their network.

SPTech join:2005-03-26 San Pedro, CA | reply to SPTech No George,
READ THE MESSAGE FROM THE SMTP SERVER
"Our system detected an illegal attachment on your message".
ILLEGAL is the key word.
The file I sent was deemed an ILLEGAL file according to our GMAIL BIG BROTHER partners.
There was NOTHING VIRUS RELATED IN IT.
I know the content, and it was CENSORED plain and simple. |

I'm glad that DLSE has thrown me away from its old plain vanilla mail service and pushed me to run my own mail server. Now there is no problem with any attachments. There is no any delay in sending/receiving mail correspondence. There is no any snooping or filtering. There is no any hacks required to turn off any filters. There is no more 7 intermediate nodes (look at message headers) that every mail travel through instead of just one (mine) SMTP server when I receive my mails. There is no problem with configuring my mail client to completely remove messages from my mail server when my mail client fetches it. There is no problem with sending mails to myself. There is nothing illegal found (because I do not send/receive anything illegal at all), etc..........
And more importantly, Google is not tracking my correspondence and doesn't link it to my web search requests...
Good luck - flock of sheep. Google needs you |

SPTech join:2005-03-26 San Pedro, CA 1 edit | reply to SPTech OK so now you can't send a ZIPPED executable as an attachment.
You call that good?
I have clients that do that all the time. Oh but wait, there is a work around... just do this, then that, and then this again and it will send properly. What a bunch of garbage!
And since when has any ZIP file ever infected a server?
GMAIL IS BIG BROTHER... period. And the sheep must OBEY! |

SPTech join:2005-03-26 San Pedro, CA | reply to SPTech George I know your company just wanted to get into the web/email hosting business in a bigger way, and that's why you made this deal with the devil to offload your e-mail obligations to Gmail... but I'm truly sorry your company has taken this path. If I was there in the board room, I'd have said no.
But... would the company have listened... ah well...
Good luck. |

He does what his boss tells him to do. Remember that dslextreme is owned by a big company and that company is running the show and not George. |

2 edits | reply to dslx_gm The referenced link only discusses INCOMING email. BTW I was able to SEND zip and rar attachments that were not molested.
I do think Google is going WAY overboard by bouncing msgs with zip attachments - newbies are not likely to get infected by clicking those. My incoming rar file test made it (and was Scanned!) but it's only a matter of time...
I looked through the TOS and could only find a typically vague reference to this behavior: "8.3 Google reserves the right (but shall have no obligation) to pre-screen, review, flag, filter, modify, refuse or remove any or all Content from any Service."
If I signed a contract, paid $$$ for gmail and Then found this obscurely documented behavior out After the fact, I would be VERY PISSED! This is slimy business 'ethics' that hurts DSLX reputation. |

1 edit | reply to SPTech I guess I understand why this is done, and that is one of the reason I have kept my AOHell account. I can send it over their servers.
At least they're good for something.

 | reply to SPTech There are a few work-arounds to this.
1. Try using rar instead of zip. Supposedly Google does not look inside rar files. I don't know if that's still true.
2. Rename the extension from .exe to .jpg.
3. Upload the file to a free file sharing service. Email the link to the file.
4. Mail through Yahoo or AOL if they'll allow executables.
All a pain. Google should let these files pass and scan for virus/trojans if they must. |

 | said by altidude:1. Try using rar instead of zip. Supposedly Google does not look inside rar files. I don't know if that's still true. I use a free application called 7-Zip to archive files. I compress to zip by default but wanted to try the native 7z format to see what happens. I added an .exe file to a 7z compressed file and sent it through gmail smtp to another gmail account that I have. The message passed through with no problem. 7-Zip is free and there are versions for Windows, Linux, Mac and other OS. I use it on XP and Vista with no problems. |

GMail can examine .exe filenames even in password protected zipped files as the archived filename listings are not encrypted by the Zip program. |
