| Question about DSL modem & filters
A sister-in-law recently ordered the basic DSL service, ie. 768 kbps down/384 kbps up, from AT&T. She also ordered a Motorola 2210 modem from the AT&T online store at the same time because that package did not include a free modem. Now she is saying to me, via email, that she did not receive DSL filters with the modem. Hmmm....
When I ordered my 3 Mpbs Pro DSL service from AT&T back in February I received a free Motorola 2210 modem that included a filter kit, ie. one dual port filter and three single port filters, and two patch cables.
So my question is does AT&T really not bundle the filters when you purchase the modem singley, ie. not in a DSL service package for example? -- "When all else fails, read the instructions..." MS-MVP Windows Desktop User Experience |

| Filters are not included in the basic modem package from the online AT&T store (or also when buying it from the physical AT&T phone stores). That is one way they can sell it for $49. This package includes a patch cable and a twisted wire phone cord. I think this package is intended as a modem replacement package and not a new installation kit.
The AT&T-Yahoo DSL installation kit from Best Buy (and maybe other places) has a set of microfilters in it along with the other parts. This kit costs $70. |

I will pass that on to her. She can purchase a four filter kit, 1-dual port and 3-single port filters, for $15 from the AT&T online store. -- "When all else fails, read the instructions..." | reply to SoonerAl This morning she ordered 1-single port filter and the four filter kit [1-dual port and 3-single port filters] since she has five telephones.
LOL... I never knew she had so many phones since she has a pretty small house.
She did verify that the modem she bought from AT&T did include the data [green] and Ethernet [yellow] cables.
So she is good to go. I am going to install the modem and get her DSL setup next week after I get home... -- "When all else fails, read the instructions..." MS-MVP Windows Desktop User Experience |

| reply to SoonerAl A whole-house splitter is the nice alternative if you can do some wiring. It is technically superior, and it allows you to not have to have filters at the various phones and devices.
These are available on Ebay typically for $20 ... $40.
I am not saying filters are inadequate. They are the right solution for a renter or somebody who cannot do simple wiring for some reason. |

I really have no idea until I get there next week to see what she actually has. Personally I have only seen one phone in the house when I have visited and that was in her home office. It was an old touch tone phone that I put on a splitter for her so she could have dialup internet access from the desktop I setup for her in the same room. Of course that was two years ago.
StillLearn...
She actually lives in a manufactured home [ie. trailer home] which is not condusive, IMO, to any rewiring, at least by me... -- "When all else fails, read the instructions..." MS-MVP Windows Desktop User Experience |
