Sprint should just silently convert Nextel into a Xohm brand, or silently switch the phones to CDMA 800/1900/SMR (iden freq). The CDMA standards org already made provisions/band plan for CDMA in SMR (although CDMA is now a dead standard, nobody to fund further development since all the big boys, and therefore small boys (for roaming) went to LTE (GSM)).
Sprint already has converted some Boost users to CDMA as part of their Boost Unlimited program. Since Qchat came out, killing IDEN is full feasible now. I havn't heard any criticism of Qchat yet. If there is any tell me. |

My Nexthell BB 7100i does a lot of data... mostly email, and some WAP/mini Opera.
It is slow, but fairly reliable.

I wouldn't say that Nextel users are not concerned with data. I can tell you that many businesses are dependent on the PTT, however, major corporations, like Comcast even, moved to Sprint for the HSD over PTT which, in this case, is a major step back.
I for one, too, just once case here speaking for myself, dropped Nextel over Sprint for the data as well. I definitely miss the PTT side of the system, but, since everyone else I know (about 25 users) dropped Nextel for other brands like Sprint and AT&T for the needs of HSD & for better PDA access.
Many businesses are moving to network capable applications requiring a good internet connection. When it comes down to it, the PTT will lose out in the long run. What's a shame is they didn't do more to bridge the iDEN and CDMA phones like they started, and brought out more PDA iDen capable phones. (THAT was a MAJOR mistake on their part as well)
But, like so many others have said, Spring royally fu*ked up Nextel when they purchased it; and this deal NEVER should have went through.
Honestly, if Nextel would "sprint-off" into their own land again, AND if they'd do something by keeping the PTT and merging the voice and data with a CDMA or other technology, and package it with good customer service  .. they'd have a winner. I'd *probably* dump Sprint in a heart beat. (Though I do like the $99 simply everything plan, too)

Netxtel has a niche. If they focus on that, as well as getting some of their previous industrial customers back, they might just find a foundation from which they can build. Sprint...what a mess!

iDEN has more in common with GSM than it does with CDMA, and its still not compatible. SIM cards + MAP back end allows for iDEN to GSM roaming with ease, however, there have been very few GSM iDEN (i2000?) devices made, and there were for overseas roaming.

iDEN and LTE have no correlation to each other.
SouthernLinc, NII, and nexhell are NOT phone systems they are RADIO systems similar to trunked public safety as in Motorola SmartZone, M/A-Com EDACS, LTR etc.. They have more in common with Motorola's than the others since iDEN is a Motoroal protocol but the concepts apply.
This is the reason spring and nexhell made no sense to start.

Plus along with the bandwidth needs of 1.4MHz to 20MHz for LTE after rebanding nexhell would only have 7MHz total between 862 and 869, and in the SE has to share that 7MHz with SouthernLinc. So dedicating the minimum 1.4MHz to LTE and then spreading the rest out for iDEN, plus site issues.... Don't think thats going to help.
nexhell users are there mainly for PTT and thats it. Fast data is a minimal concern for most on iDEN.
