Should I continue paying after cancellation?

I pay for my sisters internet + CATV service while she is in school. My name is on the bill at my mothers house. I canceled last month (Sept). They're on ATT/Directv now. I paid the final amount due for partial month service, 1/4 of the month. The amount still owed was written down by rep at Comcast's office when modem and DVR was turned in. I paid it online and have confirmation + Comcast acknowledges I paid this amount. There was also a retentions guy calling back asking to come back, they'll waive the install fee and give better rates. So they know there is no Comcast service at the residence. Analog TV service does not work so everything is indeed shut off.

I'm still getting billed for service now. Looks like they want to collect for the DVR, Modem, service, etc for Oct to Nov. I also have a past due amount listed. It was for the rest of the partial month. They had service for 1/4 of the month and comcast wants the other 3/4 of that month + 1 months payment.

So should I pay the full amount requested, over $200 until they figure it out? I don't want anything negative on my credit reports. I know Comcast does some funky stuff with credit reports. I remember them making inquiries on their own customers out of the blue before. How long will it take them to credit it back to me. I don't need the money back right away, but I would like it back eventually.

I did online help 3 times now asking about this for the past 2 1/2 weeks. I still show a due bill.

Re: When does Comcast stop billing after cancellation?

Ninja,

Is this account registered on Comcast.com? If yes, then log on and see what you bill says on there. Billing stops the day you told the rep you didn't want services anymore but usually keeps on buidling until you are physically disconnected. The bill you received most likely processed before your services were physically disconnected. Do not pay it. You mentioned that analog service is dead so that sounds like you have been physically disconnected at the tap.You should receive a final bill with services backdated off to date you requested services to be disconnected.

Hope this helps.

I do pay the bill on the website. This latest PDF bill was dated Oct 1. Service was disconnected the first week of Sept.

Website and billing seems to still think I have service. I also just called in the 800 number to check the account balance, it still says over $200 is due. Everything is turned in, I have the receipt with serial numbers. I don't want any negative marks on my records for non payment so I'm tempted just to pay it.

I would call the billing number listed on the bill to get this straightened out. Even if it is a Comcast billing error, not paying an outstanding balance blindly without getting it first corrected by Comcast or any other company just usually makes it more painful than it needs to be.

If the service address is in the same area you are located and there is a local Comcast office relatively close by to you, it might just be just easier to take the documentation there and speak to someone in person. I am definitely not suggesting paying them additional money not owed, but you need for Comcast to tell you that you don't owe any money, not us.

Re: Should I continue paying after cancellation?

Even if they did send it to the first collections agency, that typically doesn't show up on a credit history. It is when you ignore bills for months or years that affects your credit.

As far as your bill is concerned, I wouldn't pay a dime of it if you are sure you don't owe it. Instead, contact them again and find out why you are being billed. More than likely, it is just a simple mistake made by a rep that did not close out your account properly.

Wrong, the moment the collection agency gets the file, they will pull ur credit report and also place that file as inm collections even before they get a letter mailed out to u. And in these financial times i doubt comcast will wait to sell off that debt to a collection agency more than a few days past ur due date since ur no longer a customer

Re: When does Comcast stop billing after cancellation?

If it helps any, when moving to Comcast HSI from AT&T DSL, ATT billed me for 2 months of service after it was terminated. Eventually they corrected it, but it took a few calls.

Good luck with Comcast!

Wow...here's my take on things. If you can prove you canceled, with paperwork, and they continue to bill you, send them one official letter with the proof. Tell them anymore from them, especially with negative reports to the credit agencies and they will next hear from your attorney along with paying his bills for the time and effort. That will get expensive for Comcast.

Wrong yourself. The first collections contact does not typically affect your credit long term. If you don't pay it, then it will, but if a debt goes to the agency and you pay it right away, that incident gets taken off. Therefore, it doesn't affect your credit rating.

Comcast just loves to extort money from people even after they cancel. When I left Comcast this past summer (The Happiest Day of My Life)I returned the 3 POS Moto HD-DVR boxes and EMTA. A month later received a bill for the equipment, thank god I got a receipt when I return them. I went to my local office and they still gave me a hard time because I had a photocopy, so I had to go home and get the originals. Comcast suxs.

Rob trust me if you could ever experience Comcast in my area Union II NJ you would be pissed at them also. They have not upgraded us in years but still charge so much more money for the same crappy service, I call that extortion.

I'm not familiar with Union II NJ.

May I ask if you mean Union Township, or Union City, N.J., or neither ?

Yes I believe I am helping posters by telling them to leave Comcast and don't look back. I did and I am happier and a little richier then when I was with them Crooks.

Ninjatutle, I would call in and ask if the job shows as completed in system. Many times the w/o is still open which will cause billing to still print out another bill. Once the w/o is completed it will trigger the billing system to backdate the charges to when the services should have been disconnected. You will typically see "charges" for the equipment if it hasnt been returned though these charges remove as soon as equipment is taken off the account.
