| xbox Live Dropped Connections
I have a 2wire 1800HG router that I'm using to connect to AT&T's DSL which I cannot for the life of me get it to work properly with xbox live on my xbox 360. I am using a wired connection, not the wireless.
While the connection tests out fine on the xbox's diagnostics, I keep getting my connection dropped. Sometimes it will be within a few seconds of connection to xbox live, other times I can play on-line for an hour. I had thought maybe it was my xbox, but have tried someone else's xbox and the same thing happens.
I have attempted opening the ports that the 2wire site suggest, creating an allowed individual application for xbox live, and I have double checked it. No luck, same thing happens.
I have attempted simply setting the 2wire to DMZplus Mode for the 360. Again, no luck, same thing happens. Dropped connections for no apparent reason.
I have no issues at all with any of my home computers or my PS3 on the same network. This seems to be unique to the xbox 360.
The wiring is fine as far as I can tell, I have tested it on numerous occasions with separate computers and shifted the xbox to other known working locations in the house and it still has issues. I have restarted and rebooted my modem and the 360 more times than I want to admit. The DSL looks fine from what the 2wire's diagnostics show.
I really don't know what else I can do to get it working in a more stable manner. AT&T says that if everything else in the house works, it's the xbox's fault. Microsoft says it's 2wire's fault and to buy another modem/router. 2wire says that if I followed their instructions for connecting an xbox and it's not working then it's the xbox that's the problem. I can't fault any of these positions.
After doing a search of this forum, it appears that this is a common issue for people but I haven't seen a solution. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this? |

| Possible IP conflict assigning in your network somewhere?
Manually assign another IP to the 360 along w/ the other info you'll need which you can get from the UI of the 1800 or IP config from your PC.
Have you noticed if you're actually loosing sync at the 2wire itself when you drop connection, may be an indication of a whole other prob.
Firewall rule, DMZ not necessary to set up for XBL in these units, are NAT friendly for OL gameplay and would have nothing to do w/ connection issues. Using the 2701 hg-b here, no probs.
Just my 2c. Peace! |

| Thanks for the help and sorry for the delay in responding. I had started checking on some of the items you had brought to my attention when the 360 died and had to go in for service.
I got it back this weekend and assigned a static IP for the unit, created a new firewall rule opening the ports that 2wire and Microsoft say are needed for XBL to work properly and dropped the DMZ option for the 360.
The unit seemed to do alright initially but then it started up with the dropped connection issue again. At the time it was the only item on the network.
In looking at the various diagnostics/error logs for the 2wire, it does not appear to be loosing sync but does show a number of terminated inbound traffic sessions that seem to coincide with the dropped XBL connections.
It could be that the 2wire is finally showing its age and that XBL is putting too much of a strain on it. I'm not sure what I need to do beyond the possibility of replacing the modem and starting again. |

| reply to TheHypnoToad I have a suggestion for fixing the problem..You may try to assign a static ip address and do not use dmz mode. dmz mode will only open common ports. first is we have to consider the age of the router. better to possibly do a firmware upgrade first then hard reset the modem. after that, setup your internet connection and wireless as well. Assign a static ip address on the specific pc within the range of assigning ip address and after establishing connection, use the port forwarding and open the ports for the specific game and you may get the port numbers from the oem then powercycle everything (turn off the pc/router/modem) for 30 seconds then turn on the modem then router then pc and wait for the lights to be establish first before opening each devices. Most of the time it will work and I had this experienced in linksys and 2wire.. |
