| Dead 5200?
I have 2 new Speedstream 5200's. One is the 240 model and the other is the 242 version. I purchased these both new (appeared to be) from the US off the internet (I am not aware of the provider) . I am running on ethernet (no USB) with Windows Vista , a D-Link router, and thru 3Web. When I hook up the 240 version, everything is fine. When I try the 242 version, everything lights up fine, indicates the DSL and activity lights, but cannot seem to access the internet.
I have used a friend's 242 version, and it ran fine as it was a Bell version. Is there anything that I am missing? I am not very familiar with DSL modems, so please excuse my ignorance. I was under the impression that when using DSL modems on ethernet lines, you do not need any software upgrades.
Is there anything that I may have missed (I did try the reset button on the bottom once), because I really feel blonde at this moment! This unit is to be a back-up modem, so I do have time to play. Again, I am a newbie to this stuff, so please be gentle. |

| Again, I am really not familiar with these modems and their terms. Could you please direct me step by step (real slow)as to how I would find out what the settings are. Yes, I am a dummy with this stuff...really not my thing, but I am willing to learn.
The software that came with the modems is not compatible with my Vista program. It seems to dislike the software really, so I have not been able to "read" anything other than the simple manuals that came with the units. They say to hook up the modems by ethernet, and there is no software or fiddling required. I do have access to another computer with XP if I have to use the software that came with the units.
Thanks. |

| I can't help you with this as I do not one of these modems here myself. They are all somewhat different, but they all have some type of management interface, most often accessible with a web browser. Try that first, but you have to know the local private IP address of the modem. |

| reply to pylonboy Check the setup page on both units and verify they are the same. If they are not the same then you will need to fix the one that does not work to match the one that does work.

| Yes, I wish that I had that software that you are showing. Every time I try to install the cd that came with the unit, my computer freezes when it tries to update the registry. Any ideas?
I take it this software is in the cd? Do you have access to a Vista compatible install?
Thanks. |

Do you have to plug in the usb cable? Remember that I am using the ethernet port only right now.
Do you access it through a web browser? And if so, what is the site?
Thanks. |

| reply to pylonboy That is not software. That is the Web Interface inside the 5200 Modems. To access it, you type 192.168.254.254 in your browser.
You must first hook one PC directly to the Modem using a Ethernet cable (no Router in the way) to reach the Modem Web Interface.
DO NOT use any CDs that came with the 5200s as they may damage your PC since they are not made for your ISP.
Open a supported browser and type the following URL »192.168.254.254 and click "Go".

The modem management interface will prompt for a username and password to access the setup screen.
Enter "admin" for the username, Enter "admin" for the password.

The management interface will then load and prompt for the ISP username and password.

Stop and check the numbers only and write them down. Close the browser, turn off the modem and then hook up the other one. Repeat and check the numbers again. Do they match?

graysonf Premium,MVM join:1999-07-16 Fort Lauderdale, FL | reply to pylonboy I already said you access it thru a web browser. You have to know the LAN private IP address of the modem.
Run ipconfig from a command prompt. Try using the Default Gateway IP address. |

| O.K., thanks gentlemen.
I tried that earlier with no luck. Found out why. I was just trying the one modem.
With the 240 version (the one that works), it will not access through the porthole that you gave me. The 242 version will work, and it seems to point out some failures. Unfortunately, I can't compare the two because they both don't have access through that IP address. Is it possible that the other one (the 240 version) should have a different IP address? This is the results I got with the 242 version that does not work.

| Well gentlemen, I owe you a big thank you.
The modem is working fine now. All I had to do was to change it over to bridge mode. I guess it was still trying to find a certain IP address until I changed the mode.
Thanks again for your time and efforts!! I am now starting to learn just a little more than I came here with.
You guys are great. |
