Dialup is constrained to 56 kbps because voice is digitized at the Central office at rate of 64 kbps. However, other technical constraints limit speed to somewhat less then 64 kbps. If you are on an ISDN line you would be able to use full 64 kbps.

Bottom line dialup is a good as it will ever be. V.90/92 are clever designs that optimize speed based on topology of modern telephone network.

Most likely your phone line is on some form of pair gain that allows phone company to multiplex multiple customers over a single circuit.

I tried NetZero 3G once, I think the login was around 42kbps.

I have AOL dialup now and it logs me in at 49kbps all the time.

I know what most people think about AOL, but the 49kbps login is why I keep it.
