However, other technical constraints limit speed to somewhat less then 64 kbps. If you are on an ISDN line you would be able to use full 64 kbps.

Check out link I posted for technical details.

Bottom line dialup is a good as it will ever be. V.90/92 are clever designs that optimize speed based on topology of modern telephone network.

/tom

There are a lot of manufacturer companies working in the manufacturing of modems. Dialup internet is rapidly losing his users because of low speed modem.

Alex Peter

tschmidt : Connect speed is a function of telephone network. V.90/92 modems require that one and only one digital-to-analog conversion exist between ISP and customer. Most likely your phone line is on some form of pair gain that allows phone company to multiplex multiple customers over a single circuit.

If you are interested in the gory details I've posted more info on my site:

/tom

fixed typos

Duramax08 : u might get better now and then but most likely you will need a new modem. I got me a laptop recently and it logs me in at 40 kbps all the time. Dial is should been dead but a few people still use it. It would be best if you go to high speed if possible.
