| If I disable security for gaming.. ?
The only thing I'm running that stays on is KIS. I never really cared before but my current system build is playing Crysis nicley and I've never been able to play it before. Still, I need all the help I can get.
I am behind a Linksys router, so I wouldn't be totally naked I suppose. Two questions: 1) I assume that I should totally exit KIS when gaming (instead of pausing it). 2) I'm assuming I'll be safe enough for a couple of hours at a time considering I won't be web surfing or checking email (etc). ?
Just curious - thanks. |

| 1) When playing a game I do not exit or pause KIS, but I do shut down BOClean, exit Windows Defender, and close the Windows Sidebar. Not sure how much that helps on resources but every little bit counts.
2) When playing a game I'm usually disconnected from the Internet. As long as your router has some type of firewall and you've at least changed the default password then yes you'll likely be fine playing a game for a couple hours, although if KIS isn't allowed to do it's job then outbound connections might be a concern, but I tend to be a little overly paranoid. -- "...eat Spam from the can, watch late night C-Span, and rock out to old school Duran Duran..." |

| reply to Boz How about this?
Test at GRC Shields UP! with KIS on. Save results.
Now kill KIS and/or Pause it, whatever.
Now test again at GRC Shields UP! Is anything different?

| I know the manual for Crysis says to exit your AV/Firewall but honestly, sometimes that might not give any performance boost at all. I've tried closing Avira before I play and I've tried leaving it on - no change in anything.
The problem for me was also in remembering to re enable my AV, etc.
I think if you have a good CPU and enough ram, it doesn't make a difference. The game mostly just eats graphics cards. |

| reply to Boz I have a HUGE problem with playing any game that tells me to disable or lower my protection.

One of the reasons I got my first software firewall was for protection WHILE gaming online. Back then I was worried about something installing while I was playing and couldn't see my desktop. These days it isn't much of a concern since I've added better protection (Registry Protection, Process Guard, etc). |

My response was based on that important fact. Users behind Routers, that check their KIS logs find that they have no incoming entries logged unless Port Forwarding has been setup as the Router catches it al on the inbound side.
What is the biggest benefit of NAPT? What does it mean to drop all unsolicited incoming packets?
