| [motherboard] Tatooing Bios on motherboard
I want to install original OS (Windows XP) on a new motherboard. I have the same processor. Had lightening run in on the ethernet. True story, lightening hit less than 5 feet out side the house. Was a cedar post there. Anyway, cable went into the house there. It fried the modem, dvd player, tv,router, and this 1 computer. It was wired to the router. Didn't burn through ethernet cord though. Strange to me ...? We have had alot of severe thunderstorms here lately. My friend had surge protectors on eveything. Just not cable/internet. He has RR. Honestly I don't have phone or ethernet/dsl surged either. Anyway.... I had to change out motherboard, hard drive, power supply(burnt connector at motherboard). Any help? Everyone on here has been helpful so far. Hope you can help me now. Oh. I have the restore disks. It says not for this computer. I have read about tatooing online. But they say call hp or microsoft. I figure I could ask on here first. |

1 edit | Why don't you itemise the helps you want instead of a "any help"?
If you have to change out so many things in a system and you don't know if those the only items need to be changed, might as well buy a new system.
May consider installing a lighning rod taller than the cedar post.
-- I used to be indecisive, now I am not sure. |

if so, what are you having a problem with?
if not, whatever hardware you're reusing is the problem. |

The install discs are looking for the old hardware, not seeing it, and rejecting the install.
Enough components have been replaced that the install discs perceive a new/different computer.
The OP can call MS and ask them politely, explaining the situation. I don't have much in the way of hope though. -- Striving for Parfection. |

| reply to bones200 The HP discs are looking for the HP tattooed (sp?) BIOS.
It sounds like the machine is either out of warranty or HP would not cover the repair due to lightning strike so you replaced the motherboard yourself. You'll either have to purchase a motherboard from HP or buy a retail/OEM version of Windows. -- Rule #62: Don't take yourself so damn seriously! |

| reply to bones200 Same thing happened to my Compaq. I bought a retail motherboard and installed a retail copy of XP and everything works like it did before. The only thing you loose by not using your recovery disks is the pre-installed crapware that came with the computer |
