Which Software Firewall??

Hi all,

Just recently I purchased a new pc with Vista 64bit. Unfortunatley Zonealarm, a program I have used for years has come to an end since there is no 64 bit version. So now I have to look elsewhere for a program similar to what zonealarm provided. Can you recommend something that is equivalent or better than zonealarm? I am looking for a program that will alert me when any application or process tries to communicate to the internet as well as inbound. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated. Paid or Free is fine.

Thanks in advance.

Its also better to use a router for a firewall with SPI packet filtering since software firewalls tend to be disabled if a bad guy comes to into your system...

I would recommend Linksys, Cisco, or Juniper.

Some thought or consideration there.

I just started using Comodo 3 on one of my XP PCs. I am very impressed. I followed bellgamin's setup recommendations.

I like Online Armor free.

Worked well with both inbound and outbound protection when I used it. It also has executable protection which you can turn off if you don't need it.

I do too, but last I checked there was no 64bit version.. (note I haven't checked in a month or so).

OA 3 still Beta only, and is Win XP and Vista 32 Bit. No release date other than "soon", and no real time line I've seen lately at the OA Support Forums as for 64 Bit release.

I've had it on one computer for about a week. I liked it so much that I've installed it on 3 more today.

A side note: Antivirus2009 Professional tried to sneak into 2 of my computers today. Watch what permission you grant. I am usually sloppy but thankfully I read very carefully today.

What were you doing when that happened? Any particular site?

I disabled my network while I was installing Online Armor. As soon as I got back on line I was hit with a request to allow Antivirus2009 Professional. I remember that this was "bad stuff"- I blocked it and told Online Armor to remember that.

edit: I'm not sure I had even brought up my browser.

Comodo

Comodo all the way. No yearly uninstall as well as with OA.

Re: Which Software Firewall??

I have decided to use Symantec Internet Security. It is the closest compared to zonealarm features. Although probably not the best but will do for now.

My favorite is Outpost Firewall Pro, but recently I have been using Comodo and I like it too and it is free. I tried NIS too and it was not half bad.
