Does anyone know if that red light camera spray that's supposed to block your license plate number from the picture actually works. I seen it in several automotive magazines for 59.99 and get one free? can anyone confirm whether or not this stuff works? |

| reply to joe642 Doesn't work at all. They do make some plastic covers for the license plate which do work, but you're likely to get a rather large fine if law enforcement finds out you've got one on your car.
The red light camera fines here are only $50, so I don't mind getting one every now and then. |

Way before we had red light and speed cameras in my area, I stuck one of those on the front of my Lotus. It wasn't a clear one, but a darkening diffuser plate. Actually, I liked the darkening affect on the front of my white car. It was interesting how if you were directly in front of the car, you could read the plate, but if you took a step or two to either side, you could no longer read, or see the plate numbers. I had it there for over 10 years and never heard a peep from any law enforcement from any state in the 10s of thousands of miles I drove with it on.
To be effective, you would probably need to have one on both ends of your car. You can see that cover in operation on my car here: »lotuscorps.home.mchsi.com/autox1.JPG |

Just spray the front of the camera and everyone can run the light to a degree.

The spray is just a marketing gimmick, and the plastic covers do indeed work. However, most places that use the red light cameras don't take lightly to the fact that you're messing with their revenue stream and LEOs will give you a citation for that, and anything else they can find.
Here, they'll cite you for "Obstruction of vehicle identification devices" or something along those lines. Basically, they're going to get some cash out of you if you run a light, and if you have a cover or something to prevent your plate(s) from being read, they'll get the cash from you for that.
I mostly see those diffuser covers on riced out Hondas / Toyotas or some of the more "exotic" cars like S2000's, seen a couple Lotus Elise's with the covers, a Viper, some Z06 Corvette's and some Porsche Boxters / Carreras. -- Off the hillbilly hook - Off the redneck chain. (I'll agree that running red lights isn't generally safe, but if some cities could run their traffic lights better it would not be an issue at all) -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0 |

Which seems to be a pretty common practice after the cameras are installed to increase revenue when it falls below expectations. |

| reply to MrFixitCT Plus shots I have seen are at like the stop line, not even a question of running a YELLOW light caught mid intersection, where a questionable matter, and most lights are a few sec delayed green )red both ways), so unless someone jumping the grren light shouldn't be a critical factor in that case either. But crossing the stop line after red they DESERVE it, and lucky nothing more than a ticket... lucky there was not a lead car dragster wanna be on the red turning green light.... and all in the hospital or DEAD. Yet still happens.
Then again morons (dozens of time a year) think they can win against a 400+ TON train with momentum that can't BEGIN to stop in time... vs their 1 ton vehicle -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

They are plenty of times that I "legitimately" run a red light.
Say I am going 50mph in a 50mph zone (actually the closest light to my house going south is in a 55mph zone) and the light turns red, I am 300ft from the light. I can 1) slam the brakes and hope that A) I don't loose control of the car and B) the car in back of me hits me or I can 2) "run the red light"
There are other places such as in the City of Gainesville where the lights are run by idiots. One of the city planners is a total nutjob and suggested to REDUCE the lanes on one road to reduce traffic. His reasning? reducing the lanes will make traffic worse so people won't drive there -- reducing traffic. Anyways they have artificially low speed limits (another thing that causes accidents to INCREASE) and the lights are not synchronized (their excuse is the lights are on "dial up" and a $18M upgrade puts the lights on "fiber optics" and somehow this will magically fix all the issue) anyways sometimes I get frustrated and run a red light because the traffic is so poorly managed.
Here's the crazy guy's website: »www.walkablestreets.com/
Guess he's never been to Amsterdam, or just about any populated European city for that matter. VERY pedestrian and bike friendly but lots of streets and car traffic... they all co-exist. -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0 |

Especialy if and intersection you are familiar with and KNOW how long the yellow light is.

What if you are talking or texting on your cell phone... what if you are eating your lunch? And one certainly doesn't want to chance spilling a beverage by stopping to fast.
You can't honestly be saying people should be paying attention to their driving when they get behind the wheel are you? |

When the power goes out likely you would be the one blowing through intersections too instead of treating them as 4 way stops, as the law and common courtesty/sense demands.

| No, but thanks for assuming.
Maybe not 300ft... my eyes aren't measuring tapes... I can judge the distance between cars and speed and all that but I can't look at something and say "that's 300 feet from here to there".... but you get the idea. Light turns yellow I am very close going a reasonably zippy speed -- it's safer to take the yellow light than slam on the brakes, better for the environment and my wallet, too. -- 09:F9:11:02:9D:74:E3:5B:D8:41:56:C5:63:56:88:C0 |

| Which again should put you in the intersection technically legal... again the shots I have seen from the cameras show someone crossing the STOP LINE when light red, in which case yes you should have the distance sense (and plenty of time to stop if not speeding actually or for conditions) to know I can't make that yellow light and be in the intersection before it turns red.. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)
