| [Rant] Roadrunner search engine
A few months ago Road runner created thier own search page to catch invalid addys entered..
»ww23.rr.com
You used to be able to OPT OUT of this crap, recently it has started coming up when i enter such things as: »www.google.cos for example. (IT DIDNT USED TO ONCE I OPTED OUT)
I even checked the prefs and it still says DISABLED so what gives??
»ww23.rr.com/prefs.php
I think this is just a way to try and track where people are going.. (Makes it easier for them)
Even if that page comes up I WILL NOT SEARCH FROM IT!!!!!
Anyone else annoyed by this?? (On Road runner or not (I wonder if other ISPs are doing this also))
I also notice if i enter something like "Good food" in my address bar IT NO LONGER GOES TO MY DEFAULT SEARCH PAGE ( »search.msn.com ) I HAVE SET,IT GOES TO THIER FUCKING PAGE! |

| reply to Dude111 I didnt download anything from them!!!
I opted out of thier search page months ago when i first got the page!! (It worked for awhile) Now they think they can put ppl onto it!!! (They steal the search inquires (Which is apparent when i type "GOOD FOOD" and it goes to thier page instead of MSN))
Road runner sucks and i hope they go out of business and soon!!!!! |

| reply to Dude111 My linux box is running a caching dns forwarder, configured to ask Level3 or OpenDNS about hosts it does not know. I opted out of OpenDNS's typo correction and other junk.

| reply to Dude111 It is still doing it now,i re-enabled it then disabled it again.......
I notice when i put "good food" in my address bar,the MSN link starts to load
»auto.search.msn.com/response.asp···ov=&utf8
But then the RR page grabs it and displays my results... (This link is and always was my main IE search page)
What do others get when clicking this link above? (On Road runner)
I notice if i take "Auto" out of the link it doesnt do it... I think Road runner is stealing the results...... (They are into many fraudulant things)
I emailed live.com and told them what was going on......
My cable modem has been locking up LIKE CRAZY the last few days......
THIS CABLE COMPANY SUCKS!!!!!!!
Everything about Time warner is garbage!!
THE PHONE SERVICE IS CRAP......... (KEEPS DROPPING CALLS) -- Quality sucks
THE CABLE IRD's ARE HORRIBLE (They keep locking up,dont have enough ram (THE DVR BOXS ARE SLOW AS HELL))
THE INTERNET SERVICE SUCKS!!! (Unless your lucky enough to have a good level coming in and your modem doesnt lock up constantly due to bad levels!)
EDIT:
All issues have been corrected.... Thank you Live.com
EDIT 2:
Its doing it again tonight!!!!
PRETTY PATHETIC WHEN THEY HAVE TO TRY AND STEAL TRAFFIC GOING TO ANOTHER SEARCH ENGINE!!!!!!! |

They shouldnt be allowed to pull traffic!!
I EMAILED LIVE.COM AND TOLD THEM AND I CANNOT BELIEVE THEY HAVENT BITCHED ABOUT THIS TO THEM!! |

| reply to Dude111 Interesting. It redirected to OpenDNS's guide (as I said, I rotate through) even though I have all search options turned off on my account settings.
Meanwhile I still get properly bonked on the head when I try to poke a non-existent domain.
I wonder if it's actually something that MSN is doing.
Curious. When using the Level3 servers I get a proper MSN search.
Hypothesis: RR and OpenDNS both have some beef with MSN. This seems silly.
Other Hypothesis: RR and OpenDNS both are trying to intercept searches, but fail to recognize searches originating from non-IE browsers (to explain why I never saw it until I clicked on Dude's link). This too seems silly.
Hypothesis the Third: RR and OpenDNS selectively ignore user preferences for reasons unknown.
Explanation: I have none.
Solution: Use Level3's lovely anycast DNS. 4.2.2.1-5. »screenshots.modemhelp.net/screen···al.shtml Properties -> »screenshots.modemhelp.net/screen···ex.shtml Properties -> »screenshots.modemhelp.net/screen···S).shtml -- The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon profitable cause... |

| reply to Dude111 I went through this shit too recently. Here's my long thread:
»[TWC] ww23.rr.com opting out doesn't work!!!
I finally got opted out correctly and now I can opt in and opt out at will very easily. I think you should call RR and ask for tier 3 and have them opt you out. The opt out is done ONCE and is connected to your modem's MAC number. If you are having a problem with mysteriously getting opted back in when you didn't go to your preferences page and opt in then that means your optout never really "took" for some unknown reason. Tier 3 can opt you out from their side. My opt out never took either and it was only by trying over and over on two different machines and changing my DNS servers from RR to Level 3 and then back to RR and messing around a lot (my thread will show what a headache it was for me) that somehow finally opting out "took".
MacLeach (he works for TW but he is an ok guy) said to call tier 3 and have them do it for me and I was going to the next day and then suddenly it actually worked and since then I can opt in and out ...in on one browser and out on another ...in on one computer and out on another, etc. It just isn't working correctly for you just like it wasn't for me and I was furious also. But because I posted in the RR forum, rather than here, I tried to not rant too much or the thread might have gotten locked.
Call TW and politely tell them you can't properly opt out and ask for tier 3 to do it for you. It is shitty that they are doing this at all and it should be opt IN not opt OUT. But it is not just TW doing this. ALL the major broadband ISPs are doing it. -- "The same ferocity that our founders devoted to protect the freedom and independence of the press is now appropriate for our defense of the freedom of the internet. | I had the problem directly connected to the modem. I don't think it was router. Easy to blame my router instead of RR where the blame belongs. Now you are sounding like a typical TW employee. |

| reply to Mele20 said by Mele20 :I had the problem directly connected to the modem. I don't think it was router. Easy to blame my router instead of RR where the blame belongs. Now you are sounding like a typical TW employee. Then why did you post this after you removed the router: said by Mele20 :
Like others have said here, it appears to be the router. I removed the router and connected directly to the modem and the opt out I did a couple of days ago is honored. I changed the first DNS server to one of Oceanic's RR ones. (I later changed the second one also to RR on the outside change the second one had been used when I test. I tested again and Proxo gives me the correct Host Name Lookup error). I then rebooted and then tried to go to a nonexistent website and did not get the TW search page. I got the expected Host name lookup failed error from the Proxomitron.
I am not buying a new router just to solve this problem... Found here: »Re: [TWC] ww23.rr.com opting out doesn't work!!!
Unless I missed it, you NEVER posted that opt out didn't work directly connected to the modem in that thread. |
