| reply to vue666 The truth is, Oct has been very bad for trading MOST years.
This why:
- People taking money out to pay for school - Companies selling items for year end cash - People selling so they don't have to worry during the holidays.
That 3rd one is a HUGE factor this year.

Which I did... the problem with that is that I can put $20K in today but it may be gone tomorrow. I'm holding off, if I ever recover the 25% I lost so far I'm taking everything out and putting it in securities.
I'll never trust the market again. -- It's all... part of the plan. |

| reply to vue666 Stewy....I'll bet it's going to take 2 to 4 years before we see the TSX at 11,500 again.
There are some great buys out there. Potash Corp of Sask POT-T at $95....recession or not people around the world need food and the farmers will need Potash Corp's products.
Some of our bank stocks are great buys. BNS and TD I like.
Imperial oil at $37....it could be $50 in 18 months.

| reply to vue666 I heard on the radio recently that you have a better chance of a lottery win than predicting the ups and downs of the market - they put it more eloquently and backed it up with 1 in X chances and what they based it on... but I'm not them. -- P.S. | That is the stupidest thing you can do, actually look at how much you lost 'so far'.
Unless you need the money immediately, don't look.
There's an old saying: You didn't lose money until you sold, or they went bankrupt.
Hopefully you haven't invested to much in bankrupt companies. |

| reply to Devanchya True enough.
But also confirm that your risk profile is still the same as it was last year or earlier. Our retirement mutual fund used to have a 60/40 split between GIC/Govt Bonds and stocks. Now it's 95% GIC/Govt Bonds. Those safe investments are the only reason that we're breaking even so far this year on rate of return. I expect the RoR to be around 2% by the end of the year.
Stocks will not return to their former levels for 2 years or more. In the meantime, I'll stick with the 3-4% guaranteed return on our current investments.

1 edit | reply to vue666 Vue, you are one of those who should be considering the near future, so you should be watching, but you can't worry to much.
Hopefully it will rebound enough to help cover some of the losses. The News keeps saying the world has ended, and everyone will be poor forever. This isn't true. The market will recover. It may take 5 years to get back, but it will recover.
Hopefully that is enough. |

| reply to vue666 The stock market has always kept ahead of inflation. That's the main reason it's necessary to invest in it, but you do have to be careful and smart about it. Don't get greedy. -- Lew Harper: You spotted my car? I hope it comes off, it's a rental! Paul Newman RIP |
