| Verizon's FIOS is most certainly the "better mousetrap." Period. And Verizon knows it and much of the general public knows it too. Verizon is in this for the long term and they are a major force, if not THE major force in telecommunications today.
Who knows, in time they just might put the whole shootin' match back together!
Just my 2 cents.

| reply to danclan I don't see many idiotic comments in the article (maybe like 2-3 at the most). The comments are just like they are on this site! Otherwise, that's a pretty good article. It shows how much Verizon is thinking about giving us what we want; more speed, no caps, no throttling. |

Give them time until they have everyone on FIOS and no way to get ANYother dsl option, then comeback and tell us about how wonderful they are. |

There still would be the "lucky" people who live in Qwest areas who would still be using DSL (while the rest of the country is stuck using 100-Mbps FiOS)! |

I agree with you partially, but I've two points.
One is that in countries like Japan and I think Korea as well, it takes much less long-term strategy to create a fiber-delivery system. It was pointed out in a PC Mag article recently that in the USA we're cheap. This is probably one reason technology stuff is cheaper here than in other parts of the world. However in other parts of the world including Japan and Korea, people are willing to pay more to get more. When fiber is rolled out they get a high sign-up rate and consequently a quicker return. And also according to that article, that is why other countries will get much higher-tech wowie zowie toys long before the USA gets them, if ever.
Secondly, you forget that there often is competition for Verizon's FiOS from cable, and that competition is a lot stronger than DSL. I don't really think DSL really competes much with FiOS (I just switched from DSL to FiOS a couple months ago -- no comparison, the only reason to not pick FiOS over DSL is that it's not available). And of course, we're also talking about video and phone services in addition to internet access. Biggest threat to POTS phone service IMO is cell phones (including Verizon/Vodaphone), not third parties using the copper owned by Verizon. But Cable has their phone competition as well.
Your comments are valid most strongly in Verizon-copper areas where there is no cable, but where Verizon is installing FiOS. Still, I think people in those areas still might not be overly upset about it. |
