Re: How many

Not that it's scientific or anything, but all of my friends who left Verizon for AT&T and the iPhone are disappointed.

They all have said the coverage isn't as good, the pricing is too steep, and given the choice, they would have stuck with their old carrier.

In the end, I think it all comes down to where you live. I switched from Verizon to AT&T specifically for the iPhone. So far, AT&T's coverage here in CT is FAR superior to the coverage that Verizon offered me for about 8 years. The call quality is also as good if not better than what I got with Verizon. I'm not sure how you can say it's more expensive than Verizon though... on average, Verizon's plans and features cost roughly 20-40% more than what AT&T charges. I'm able to get 450 anytime minutes & 5000 N/W minutes, unlimited data and unlimited TXT with AT&T for about $90/month -- the same thing with Verizon would cost around $110 to $115/month.

I totally agree, I never had dropped calls as much as I do now with an iPhone. The phone itself is cool, but should have stuck with my treo 755p on sprints network. Maybe if the android lives up to the hype I will pay the etf and jump ship.

This seems like BS to me - they had 30 days to test out the iphone and could have gone back to verizon or overlapped service time. If they really thought it sucked that bad, they could have gotten out of the att contract and went back to verizon or never cancelled verizon.

Most of the people that have switched to the iphone from another carrier say the same thing... even here where at&t coverage is the best in the country...

According to AT&T (like I believe them), a second 5MHz of spectrum is to be deployed in many areas. It is MORE than needed in many urban/suburban areas.
Voice + data on 17.5MHz of spectrum = Ok
Voice + data on 5MHz of spectrum = bad news

According to the store rep, you only have 14 days to return the iPhone. And even then there is a 10% restock fee. However, a quick look at AT&T's site says the same 30 day trial policy applies to the iPhone but there is still a 10% restock fee.

I switched from VZW to AT&T for the iPhone. I regretted the decision from the moment I ported my number. So, why didn't I switch back? Well, for all it's shortcomings the iPhone is still pretty cool. Silly reason? Yeah, but here's the other thing.

Right now I think the iPhone is still one of the best phones currently on the market. And I've been with VZW for 10 years, but VZW doesn't have the it factor with any of their phones. Storm might change that, but it's not out yet.

But here's the other thing. VZW has already announced that they will be going with LTE for the 4G network. As far as I know there are no current phones in VZW (or anyone else's) that will work on LTE right now. So, no matter what in a couple of years if you want to take advantage of LTE you'll need to get a new phone. So, in the meantime I might was well play with the iPhone and then see what VZW has to offer by 2010.

And while I understand and appreciate the cool factor of the iPhone, for me job 1 for a phone is PHONE CALLS.

It can do all kinds of cool stuff, but if the calls don't go through, it's kind of a moot point.....

Pre-cisely!

Going back to when they were Bell Atlantic Mobile, VZW has been stressing (in their ads) the network behind the phones. Meanwhile, what is AT&T Mobility primarily stressing in their ads? Surprisingly, not their domestic coverage, but their overseas coverage (all of which requires roaming, and paying roaming charges). For most cell phone users (even those that travel), unless you travel overseas greater than fifty percent of the time, overseas coverage means diddly-squit. It's domestic coverage (especially without paying roaming fees) that is of primary importance. Cool features on a phone are only important if I can (or will) use them; otherwise, they are largely pointless.

That's interesting.
Currently with the "V" I get the same things you listed above as well as VZ navigation, ESPN's MVP for $79.00 a month.

Granted, it's where you live. ATT's 3G service here is poor. I know, have an LG Vu as well. Very poor 3G reception unless I'm in downtown SLO. Too bad too, ATT's TV side is awsome! Great reception, decent offerings.
