| [RESOLVED] HJT Log: Zlob downloader and related stuff
I've been cleaning and updating my neighbor's computer off and on for a couple of years, and at this point there are items remaining that Adaware, Defender, and Spybot don't remove.
Symptoms: - several desktop links to "antivirus scan" , "spyware test" all pointing to linkondezktop dot com/test/?c=91658w
- a link in the startup folder to the same as above
- defender picks up and removes (several times) trojanDownloader.win32/zlob.gen!AX, .gen!CE, and .ANS
- Spybot could not remove zlob.downloader.apl and casaleMedia. It removed others: antispycheck, smitfraud, spylockedfakeAlert, win32.BHO.je, zlob.downloader.vdt
-trendmicro housecall: identified and removed "TSPY_ZLOB", called it "possible ZLOB8"
-Adaware gets an access violation in safe mode.
- McAfee viruscan picked "puper" trojan in _restore area.
Here's my HJT log:

| Re: [Trojan] HJT Log: Zlob downloader and related stuff
Hi Don2580, sorry it's taken so long to get to you.
I suggest printing out each set of instructions and reading the entire post before proceeding. It will make following them easier. Please follow the directions in the order listed.
Please disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender. Click on Tools, General Settings. Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended). After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender. After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE: -Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer -Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab -Click the "Delete Cookies" button -Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button -When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
Please disable McAfee's Spyware Protection as it may interfere with fixes that we need to make. Double-click on the McAfee SecurityCenter icon (the red M) in the System Tray (the area to the left of the clock) When the SecurityCenter window opens, if you see -> Advanced Menu in the bottom of the left pane, click on it. In the left pane, go to Configure > SecurityCenter In the right pane, under Protection Status, click the Advanced button Place a checkmark in the following items: - SystemGuard protection is disabled. - Spyware and potentially unwanted program scanning is disabled. - Script scanning is disabled. Click OK In the left pane, click on Computer & Files In the right pane, turn Off the following items: - Spyware protection is enabled - SystemGuard protection is enabled - Script scanning protection is enabled Close the McAfee SecurityCenter
After you are through with the below instructions, it is very important to turn those settings back on. -- Important!
I see you have Viewpoint installed... Viewpoint Manager is considered to be foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval, but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change though, please read this article: »www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546 I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present: - Viewpoint Viewpoint Manager - Viewpoint Media Player Reboot afterwards. -- Important!
If you chose to uninstall Viewpoint, after rebooting, using Windows Explorer delete the following folder if still there: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed): -Go to Tools > Options. -Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window. -Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Private Data). -Click OK to close the Options window Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All. A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin -Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok. -Let it scan your system for files to remove. -Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked. -Press OK to remove them.
Download Bill Castner's FixPolicies.exe, a self-extracting ZIP archive, to your Desktop from here: - Double-click FixPolicies.exe. Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open. The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies. - Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd. - A black box will briefly appear and then close.
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application. -Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. -If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. -Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan. -The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient. -When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. -Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. -When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note) -The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM. -Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
Now you need to run HijackThis and click "Do a system scan only." Place a check next to the following entries (if they are still there):
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = »windiwsfsearch.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = »windiwsfsearch.com R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = »windiwsfsearch.com R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = »windiwsfsearch.com/ie6.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = »windiwsfsearch.com R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = »windiwsfsearch.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = »windiwsfsearch.com/ie6.html R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = »windiwsfsearch.com R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = »windiwsfsearch.com R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = »windiwsfsearch.com O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CFEE97A3-4911-444D-8BE8-E243A23D3DE2} - C:\Program Files\Applications\iebt.dll (file missing) O3 - Toolbar: Internet Service - {144A6B24-0EBC-4D89-BF09-A06A718E57B5} - C:\Program Files\Applications\iebr.dll (file missing) O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [wblogon] C:\WINDOWS\system32\algg.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [smile] C:\Program Files\Applications\wcs.exe O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: impetuousities - {0ba3e00d-b660-46e6-a2db-2672ee82dc98} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\oanlvs.dll (file missing)
If yo chose to uninstall Viewpoint as recommended, also check (if still there): O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
Now close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" to have HijackThis fix the entries you checked.
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files: Click Start. Open My Computer. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders". Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option. Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option. Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files and delete them (if still there): C:\Program Files\Applications\iebt.dll C:\Program Files\Applications\iebr.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\algg.exe C:\Program Files\Applications\wcs.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\oanlvs.dll
If you chose to uninstall Viewpoint as recommended, also delete the following folder (if still found): C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
Now you need to hide the files you un-hid earlier: Click Start. Open My Computer. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading unselect "Show hidden files and folders". Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option. Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
Download ComboFix© by sUBs from one of these links:
Save the file to your Desktop.
Familiarize yourself with ComboFix before running it: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.
Disconnect from the Internet (pull the connection cable) -- Important Close McAfee AntiVirus and Personal Firewall and any anti-spyware programs you may be running.
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts. Don't click on the ComboFix window while its running; that could cause it to stall. When finished, and after reboot, it should open a log, combofix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.
After the system restarts, your antivirus program should be running again. If it isn't, restart it manually. Reconnect to the Internet.
Please post a new HijackThis log, the log from MBAM, the log from ComboFix (combofix.txt), and note any errors encountered.

All went smoothly. I am impressed! MBAM and Combofix each removed some substantive things, and the system seems quite snappy now.
All went smoothly with no errors. I especially liked the way that combofix installed the recovery console.
Here are the HJT, MBAM, and Combofix logs. ============================================

| said by Don2580 :All went smoothly. I am impressed! MBAM and Combofix each removed some substantive things, and the system seems quite snappy now. Excellent!
Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field: ComboFix /u
Make sure there's a space between Combofix and / Then hit enter.
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.
Create a Restore Point •Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore •Select Create a Restore Point and then Next. •In the box for "Restore point description", enter a descriptive name and press Create •When the "Restore Point Created" window appears, click Close
Run Disk Cleanup •Go to Start > Run and type the below line: cleanmgr •Click OK •If you have more than one drive, select the drive Windows is installed on •Click OK •When Disk Cleanup opens, select the More Options tab •In the System Restore section (bottom of window), click Cleanup •In the confirmation window that opens, click Yes[
Now click on the Disk Cleanup tab and select the following items: •Downloaded Program Files •Temporary Internet Files •Recycle Bin •Temporary Files Click OK in the confirmation window, select Yes (Disk Cleanup will close).
There are several free utilities you can use to help keep malware off your system:
A HOSTS file will prevent Internet Explorer from communicating with sites known to be associated with adware or spyware. A good regularly updated HOST file is MVPS HOSTS File, available at »www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm.
IE/SPYAD adds sites associated with ads and spyware to your Internet Restricted Zone and you can download that at »www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm.
A free non-resident utility to prevent the installation of ActiveX-based malware is JavaCool's SpywareBlaster. For real-time protection, there is SpywareGuard. Both are available at »www.javacoolsoftware.com/products.html.
I recommend reading Tony Klein's article So How did I get Infected in the First Place? at »www.spywareinfoforum.com/index.p···ic=60955

| Hi Joker,
I've done your suggestions, and the system seems quite fast with no apparent problems. I added the MVPS hosts file, removing the smaller Spybot hosts list. The IE-Spyad list is as it was, dated Feb 2008. Fortunately, I've convinced my neighbors to only use Firefox.
So thank you for your help and dedication you and the other helpers have to this cause. It's amazing how streamlined the fixes are. I recall having spent several days with CJ in 2005 on a problem. Now, at least for the simpler problems I had, it's 3-4 hours.
Thank you again.

| It all depends on what the infection is, and what tools are available to remove it, or if it needs to be done manually. I'm glad I was able to help. -- Proud ASAP member since 2005 | |
