I have glanced at most of the other replies and give you my own example - My SSA statement shows several years of '0' income.

This was when I filed I Form 'F' [Farming Income] and had had a loss, even though filing jointly with spouse having W-2 income.

However, if I remember my last statement correctly, it also shows a spectrum of benefits... retirement, spousal, disability, etc. Start reading here: »www.ssa.gov/mystatement/

If you have no W2 income, then the SSA record should show $0 for each year.
