[Speed] 50Mbps service

Hi, I'm a bit confused since I recently emailed Comcast to find out if my current modem, which is a SB5101, would need to be upgraded to a different model to support their 50Mbps plan.. The response was no that it would work find, but how can this be since it's a DOCSIS 2.0 modem which maxes out at about 38Mpbs... And I'm pretty sure the new service requires a DOCSIS 3.0 modem. ( I live in the Twin Cities which was/is one of the test markets for DOCSIS 3.0 )

So, which is it? Doesn't the new 50Mpbs require channel bonding?

Thanks

Mike

50 Mbps requires a DOCSIS 3.0 modem; your modem can only do DOCSIS 2. Now you may very ell be able to get 38 Mbps out of your modem when trained to the 50 Mbps service, but probably not, as you're correct in stating that D3 requires channel bonding. In short, to take full advantage of the new D3 tiers you'll need a D3 modem.

What they told you is wrong. Docsis 2 does max at 38Mbps and to get the 50Mbps speed plan, you will need an entirely different Docsis 3 capable modem.

The plan will also cost you 150 a month, just for internet.

I believe they're handing out Scientific Atlanta (Cisco) DPC2505 modems for that plan and is firmware upgradeable to the final spec when it's finished.

From the sound of things, you may also need to get a different router to take full advantage of the speed and they aren't cheap from what I've heard.

I knew it. You'd think they'd know that... Here's a copy.

Me:
What modem comes with the 50x5 High Speed Internet service? I'm assuming it''s not compatible with my SB5101.
Response:
Dear Michael,

Thank you for your message concerning your Comcast Modem Internet connection.

I have verified your modem, I see that your modem is compatible with the
50x5 high speed internet.

You need to power cycle your modem.

Sometimes it is necessary to completely shut down your cable modem connection when something isn't functioning properly. This is similar to rebooting your computer. For best results, the modem should be connected directly to the wall power outlet and not to a powerstrip. You'll also want to make sure that there are no splitters or filters on the cable line between your cable modem and the wall cable outlet.

If the cable modem is spontaneously re-booting and there is no evidence of signal-related problems, check the electrical conditions near to the cable modem. Possible causes of causes of spontaneous re-booting are wiring to the cable modem is faulty or intermittent; spikes arising from other major users of electricity like vacuum cleaners, power tools, heating thermostats, and refrigerator thermostats; electromagnetic interference from mobile phones or local radio transmitters; or the cable modem itself is faulty.

It is also important to know that most cable modems will only allow an Ethernet connection or a USB connection but not both at the same time.
Please follow the instructions below for powercycling your cable modem.

Please follow the steps below to troubleshoot the issue.

If your cable modem is connected to one computer:

1. Shut down your computer
2. Unplug the power cord of your cable modem
3. Wait 2 minutes
4. Plug the power cord of your cable modem back in
5. Wait for the online or pc light to turn solid green (This can take up
to five minutes)
6. Restart your computer

If you have a router, please follow these steps:

1. Shut down your computers
2. Unplug the power cord of your cable modem
3. Unplug the power cord of your router
4. Wait 2 minutes
5. Plug the power cord of your cable modem back in
6. Wait for the online or pc light on the cable modem to turn solid
green (This can take up to five minutes)
7. Plug the power cord of your router back in
8. Wait 2 minutes
9. Restart your computers

Thank you for choosing Comcast.

But my modem is a Docsis 2.0 modem which has a maximum speed of 30Mbps.
Doesn't the 50x5 require a Docsis 3.0 modem? Also, do you know when we'll be getting the new STB guides in Minneapolis?

Thank you
Response:
Dear Michael,

Thank you for your response.

It has been said the your Docsis 2.0 modem can still accommodate 50x5 high speed internet. Upgrading modem is still good if subscriber want to upgrade the modem.

As for Comcast total monthly bandwith, Comcast has established a 250GB monthly data usage threshold for all residential Comcast High-Speed Internet accounts. This threshold will be in place to provide a clear definition of excessive use of the service.

Comcast will initiate the 250 GB monthly data usage threshold starting October 1, 2008.

Comcast is taking a number of steps to notify its customers:

Comcast has posted a preview (in PDF format) of the amended AUP on its Network Management page as well as an overview and a link to updated FAQs.
Comcast is also running banners on its Comcast.net home page as well as on its Security Channel Web page directing customers to the Acceptable Use Policy Web page.
Comcast has also created a dedicated Acceptable Use Update page that explains all of the details of these changes to our Policy and what it means to you. »help.comcast.net/aup

Ooh, that sucks. But, a lot of times, you could get someone who has the wrong info and hasn't been told the actual goods.

Frustrating, ain't it?

Glad we were able to help you. And in the future, you might just end up coming here and asking whatever. You'd likely get a better and actually correct answer vs some of the CSRs you talk to on the phone.

Does the 150 price point effect your decision to the get the service. Several people on this board and site, including myself, say they'd not be getting it if it remains at 150 a month just for net.
