Edit: What causes stuff like this to become unregistered in the first place? Not using it for a long time?
The installation/uninstallation of a third party program may have affected the registration of the files.

Third party defrag programs such as Diskeeper sometimes cause the issue with XPs defrag.
That's funny. Cause guess what I uninstalled a few days ago before trying the standard windows defrag?

Thanks for everything.

Try re-registering the atl.dll first as follows:

Start > Run > regsvr32 atl.dll > OK

Start > Run > regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll > OK

Start > Run > regsvr32 dfrgui.dll > OK

Restart the computer.
Ooh, do I owe you a smoke! That did it, thanks!

Did you try reinstalling the application as listed in the link I posted?

"Try running the disk defragment again and it should work. If not, you can try re-installing the application by going to the C:\Windows\inf directory and locating a file called dfrg.inf. Right click that file and select Install and this will re-install the disk defragmenting tool."
What link? And I went to the directory you posted and checked out that file. No dice, I still get the error I posted in my opening post.

Edit: Saw the link finally. I'll try it and see.

Two: Still no dice.

Try the following to re-register the files for XP defrag:

Start > Run > regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll

Start > Run > regsvr32 dfrgui.dll

Restart the computer (it may not be necessary to restart the computer)
Thanks for the suggestion, but none of that worked, I got these:

What else ya got?

Defrag Message
I went to run a defrag a few minutes ago, I received this message and defrag wouldn't load.

What caused this and how do I fix it so I can defrag my HDs?
