My Turn In the VT Barrel

I have had some problems over the year+ I have had VT. Most of them went away on their own, were solved with tips/solutions found in this forum, a direct intervention from Branden, or I just lived with them.

Well this last week the VT Demons have converged to the point I actually waited through 40 some minutes of coma inducing music on the VT sUpport line to talk to a person.

He was polite through all the various parts of the calls, however after investing over 90 minutes of my time into seeking solutions to the three problems, nothing was resolved. Most of the time after the VT rep answered was spent listing to the music again when he needed to go/look else ware for answers. After one long session of being on hold, the connection dropped, the VT rep did call me back after several minutes.

Problem 1:
Not able to dial an international number to Bequia in St. Vincent & the Grenadines, West Indies. The result was always a fast busy. I looked up the dialing codes as did the VT rep. We both agreed it should be 011 784 784 457 xxxx
He said he was "changing the way my international calls were being routed". This did not solve the problem. He tried calling the international number and also got the fast busy.

The VT rep wanted to try anther number in the same city, so he found a hotel number. Again he got the fast busy as did I.

Tried calls both with and without the # after the number.

Even now almost three hours after my first call attempt, my call logs do not show any international call attempts, and yes the international calls feature is turned on for my number (confirmed by VT rep) and worked the last time I tried international calling.

When it was clear the VT rep was not going to be able to resolve this problem, I brought up two other issues that I recently noticed with my service. Now I know from reading here that these are both common reoccurring problems that plagued VT customers since the dawn of VT time.

Problem 2: When someone calls me, they can not hear me for several seconds after I answer the phone, so I have to just keep repeating hello over and over until they respond. I can hear them from the first moment, and several times the caller almost hung up thinking the line was dead. The VT rep immediately started saying it was the router firewall that was blocking inbound packets. When I repeated that I could hear the caller, and it was the caller that could not hear me, so how would the firewall block outbound packets he had no answer and reverted to the old dodge of wanting me to put the adapter in the DMZ. I checked later and the adapter (VT PAPA) has been in the DMZ for some time.

Problem 3: Long waits after dialing for the phone to ring, intermittent problem. I have long used the # after the final digit, but that is no longer reliable.

I know these last two problems have been around since before I first signed up with VT, but I do not recall that we have been informed in this forum of why it happens and how to solve it. Seems strange that such a wide spread long time problem would still exit.

Brenden, what are your suggestions?

edited to fix many spelling errors

You may have both agreed, but you were both in error!

The countries in the West Indies, for the most part, are subscribers to the North America Numbering Plan (NANPA) --- which includes the US and Canada. Therefore, in the case of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the International Country Code is "1" (just like the US and Canada) ... the Area Code is 784 (just like your Bedford TX Area Code is 817) ... and the local phone numbers are just like in the US -- 7 digits.

So dialing SV & G would be as simple as keying: 1-784-555-1234 or whatever number you desire.

Be aware that, even though the Int'l Code is "1", this is still considered an international long distance call by your local PSTN or your VoIP provider, and is billed accordingly.

Addendum: It's Brendan, not Branden. (I guess SpellChecker wouldn't catch that gaff.)

Gulp.... and gulp, oh my no wonder it did not work, hiding red face as best I can.

I tried lots of variations, but can't say for sure I tried the (now) most obvious. I looked up the calling sequence on a site I have used before, but obviously it was incorrect. Its been far too long since I was back in the Caribbean, so I guess I need to up the frequency of travel to maintain proficiency. Thanks

Sorry Brendan.
