| reply to hack4fun No, I haven't taken the challenge. Don't have to, it would cost $10 just to buy the chicken in the grocery store.
Then again I don't eat at KFC either. My husband is a carpenter and he helped remodel 3 KFC's in our area. After what he saw we quit eating there. Let's just say the "11 herbs & spices" aren't the only secret they have.
If you like KFC and want to eat there again don't ask! |

I think mine tastes waaaaay better than kfc because i don't ruin the flavor of mine with nontransfats crap! - When i first saw the subject of "KFC 10.00 challenge" I thought it was going to be "spend less than 10 bucks at kfc WITHOUT walking out hungry[everyone knows that is not possible] - now that they've gone nontransfats, they are no tastier than flat bland churches chicken. they no longer have the taste that commands their premium prices. they even ruined the taste of the biscuit with nontransfats shortening! -- When I gez aju zavateh na nalechoo more new yonooz tonigh molinigh - Ken Lee |

Well, I won't ask, but wasn't there some moderately horrific footage floating around last year of a KFC somewhere that was absolutely overrun with rats?
I think it was in NYC or some other "major metropolitan area." And the footage was, admittedly, taken after hours (no, there weren't any rats scurrying over customers, etc.). Still, the footage made you think twice about eating at KFC (or anywhere else, for that matter) ever again.
Frankly, I thought the "$10 challenge" referred to in the thread title had something to do with being paid $10 to set foot in a KFC. Not that I think their food tastes particularly bad or anything, just that I prefer my arteries to be in a somewhat viable state is all. |

| reply to CylonRed said by CylonRed :said by joako :KFC chicken does not have "11 herbs and spices." You can duplicate the taste by frying in a pressure cooker. No - that is used for tenderness - it does not make magic flavor. Typically, you use a pressure cooker to cook things faster or at a higher temperature. Pressure cookers allow you to heat liquids beyond their sea level boiling point by creating an artificially high level of pressure inside. For instance, water boils at 212F at sea level, but it might be as high as 250F in a pressure cooker.
As for whether or not it works, I'm not sure. You can get most cooking fats ridiculously hot without boiling them. More than evaporation is breaking down the fat itself. Fat gets rancid and disgusting if you burn it, and that won't be changed by atmospheric pressure. |

| reply to hack4fun IMHO KFC needs a lot more help then this challenge. I eat out a lot (too much) and like to have something different. However, the service and quality of KFC dropped around the time the were owned by Pepsi (not sure if YumYum owns them now or not). When I ordered, they'd be out of chicken strips. Um, KFC and no chicken? Also, the quality of their chicken in general has really dropped. Very little meat on most of it, only 2 pieces out of 8 have any good meat on them.
Watch the commercials next time... they advertise an 8 piece meal and you will see the chicken over-flow the top of the bucket a little. Yeah, right! 8 pieces barely covers the bottom of the bucket!
The place near me has a slick manager though. On the rare occations I stop in, they usually try to upsell me on my order (offer a larger order at a discount). I have to give that manager credit for thinking outside of the box.
It's a shame... "they could have been a contender". |

CylonRed Premium,MVM join:2000-07-06 Bloom County | reply to yock Faster cooking means less time in the fat which means less water leaves the chicken - it is more tender/moister. That is why KFC is not the only ones who do it although time does play a role as well. |

| reply to hack4fun the big problem with the $10 challenge is that they figure the cost for a shopper as if they use ALL of the spices, flour etc... when in reality - they only use a small portion and many folks can have most of the spices already and they do not take that into account. -- Brian

| reply to hack4fun The problem with my local KFC, is certain employees who let customers barter and haggle for fried chicken. I've stood there for 12 minutes while a guy was putting on his best negotiating skills for chicken and rubbing his chin and and doing hand gestures and facial expressions to get his couple free pieces of chicken. Thankfully the Indian manager doesn't deviate from the menu, so the order are cut down to 1 or 2 minutes when he is in sight or at the register.
I'll leave out some racist stereotypes from this story. |

yock Eschew the False Dichotomy Premium join:2000-11-21 Fairfield, OH | reply to CylonRed As I said though, getting the cooking fat hotter isn't a problem. The problem is what happens to the fat when it gets hotter. It tastes terrible, so I don't know what the pressure cooker brings to the party if they aren't cooking hotter. |
