Though a whole bunch of channels are "Coming soon" and one thing is annoying to me is that HD channels start not at 500 but at 503... meh. |

Well, that now makes only California still live with the "old lineup"! |

For the Philly channels we start at 510 for channel 10 and then channel 3 is 511 and channel 6 is 514 - go figure the sense for that one -- REMEMBER: Stupidity should be painful !! |

| Part of this is up to the affiliate. Channel 3 wants to be at channel 503 since it is part of their brand.
Channel 44 wants to be at 5 because they hate being so high on the dial and look at it as an opportunity to get in front of new viewers.
Personally this brings up my favorite feature of Vista Media Center with CableCARDs, which allow me to remap any channel number I want, so channel 508 is channel 8 etc. Even better with the recent TV Pack update, I can now set my clear QAM tuner to have a higher priority per channel to help automatically resolve recording conflicts. |

| said by keyboards :That makes sense and is what I'd expect, so why is it at 511 (re-read my original post) and channel 6 at 514? Look at the NYC, Mercer County NJ local channel line-ups. The local channel assignments are muddled, but I think the reason that the Philadelphia locals start at 510 is so that Verizon can have two separate blocks of NYC & Philly locals in the channel line-up for Mercer county.
The pattern is more clear for the combined DC and Baltimore line-ups in Anne Arundel-Howard County market which is between DC & Baltimore. The DC locals in the Washington Metro market are in the 503-509 range which works as broadcast 4,5,7,9 are the big four here. The Baltimore locals (broadcast 2,11,13,45,54) are placed at 510-514. The two PBS operations, Maryland Public TV (WMPT 22 is the flagship station near Annapolis) and WETA 26 in DC are at 522 & 526 and are made available to all 3 markets - Washington Metro, Anne Arundel-Howard, and Baltimore. So they have the major DC stations at 503-509, and Baltimore at 510-514 with the PBS stations common to all markets at 522 & 526. The Howard Univ PBS station in DC, WHUT PBS 32, is currently SD only but is reported to be working towards to upgrade to HD. WHUT-DT HD can be put at 532 which presents no conflicts. The Ion Network boss recently said they are planning to upgrade their broadcast to HD in January 09. So Verizon will have to pick out a 5xx channel slot for the Ion HD feed. Which for the DC market is WPXW-DT Ion 66 so they will probably stick it at 508 or something. |

Used to live in Mercer county. As far as the OTA VHF channels go, there are no overlaps or conflicts. 3,6,10, and 12 are out of Philly and 2,4,5,7,9,11, and 13 are out of NY / North Jersey and 8 is not in either market (this assured no interference between the OTA signals in the areas like Mercer County that could receive both market's signals). So they could have maintained the "branded" channels just fine. -- REMEMBER: Stupidity should be painful !! |

| reply to davemanfl Got the change here in Lakeland.
Had to reset my HD DVR though to get all the updates. Some channels had moved like the kids channels from the 220 range but were not showing up in there new spots in the 250's. Also had no channels above 900. Unplugging the DVR for a few seconds and then plugging it back in fixed it.
Regular HD receiver was fine - no reset needed. |

So they could have maintained the "branded" channels just fine. Given the distance between Philadelphia and NYC, all of the full power stations in either city will have unique (soon to be historical) analog channel #s. Same will be true of any market that gets stations from 2 cities. So Verizon could assign matching 5xx channel numbers to the broadcast locals up through 549 if they wanted to. Map the high analog number stations and low power stations to open numbers in the 2-49/502-549 range. But Verizon likes to put channels in blocks, so NYC and Philadelphia locals are in unique continuous blocks.
For the national cable channels, most of Verizon groupings make sense - Sports, News, Info & Education, Music, Marketplace, etc. But I have always found the Entertainment & Pop Culture grouping to be confusing. So USA, TNT, Spike are Entertainment, while A&E, Comedy Central, Sci-Fi, ABC Family are Pop Culture? I would have placed all of the 2 channels in those 2 categories into 1 larger group. But this is getting way off topic for the FL gets re-aligned thread. FL finally has more HD channels!
BTW, I see on the Fios channel line-up page, they now say for the 2 full set line-ups for TX and FL "Effective the week of 10/20". I could have sworn yesterday is was just "effective 10/20". |

@talbots.com | reply to keyboards The stations don't always get what they want, I've actually been told by one employee of an affiliate that the channel number can even come up during the contract negotiations. |
