Homemade Tone Generator

I'm looking for some plans on making a homemade tone generator and probe for tracing twisted pair. I know I can get one cheap on Ebay but I'm interested in making my own tools. I'm also constructing my own butt set with a $10 phone from Wal-Mart, a couple BON clips, and a metal spring loaded clip. So I'd like to add to this with a homemade toner set if possible. I don't want to have to buy circuit board and wire the thing from scratch. I'd prefer to modify or build onto some existing device. Any ideas?

How about a 1 kHz square wave generator using a couple of inverter gates, and an AM radio as the receiver.

I don't know that an AM radio would help me pinpoint one particular cable drop out of all of them. Sounds like your on the right track though.

Now that I think about it I could build some sort of attachment onto a cheap am radio that would channel the wave coming over the line into the antenna so that pinpointing one particular cable would be possible. I'm going to work on this and post pics and diagrams if I get it working. Thanks.

If you make a tone generator, these things are fairly cheap as a listening device without much modification.

Most buzzers use a modulated square wave this gives you a distinctive sound to search for.

A tone pick can be something simple as a nail wound with a couple hundred turns of 30 gauge or lighter transformer wire. You place a small high gain audio amp across the leads and use the tip to touch the pairs while seeking the tone.

All tone picks use that induction method to find the buzzers tone and excepting the Progressive Electronics filter probe picks suffer from the same problem 60 Hz hum.

So to reduce the effect of the hum simply touch ground with one hand while picking thru the cable also when picking move the probe into the binder and listen carefully if no tone is detected try again a few inches away. Buzzers especially when you’re a few miles out on the cable get weak and vary in volume depending on where in the binder you’re picking.

If you cannot fix it with a buttset and some beanies you ain't a technician.

A few miles out? Geez...I didn't know those things would travel that far over twisted pair...

A regular buzzer is good out to about 16Kf a Throwmaster tone will run out past 30Kf.
