profile drop ?

I was wondering why this would have happened. I have been happily cruising along for the last year+ ta 5000/800 profile but i checked this morning in a whim and i have been dropped down to 4200/800. Would this be bell trying to screw with me since i transferred my phone account to teksavvy recently ? or just my bad luck.

There is no such thing as a 4200/800 profile. Most likely there is/was a problem on your line and your modem lowered the synch rate below your profile rate.

1. Power your modem off for a few seconds and then back on. What is your synch rate now?

2. Post your line stats here as reported by your modem so that we can get a better idea of the quality of your line.

Would this be bell trying to screw with me since i transferred my phone account to teksavvy recently ?
Not likely, but it is hard to debunk conspiracy theories without cold, hard facts

Re: profile drop ?

i was just thinking about this i think i might know what has happened. I recently put a new phone on my phone line that has a digital answering machine. It could be causing the change in speed.

Make sure it has a filter on it. If you have extra filters, try connecting two filters one after the other. I've personally seen certain phones/faxes require two filters.

Also make sure the filters are not plugged in reverse. the "pigtal" should always be plugged into the wall jack, then the phone cable into the filter.

Edit: Correction

The MODEM cable doesn't get plugged into the filter. The MODEM should NOT be filtered, just the PHONE cables.
HiVolt was thinking one thing, and typed another.

I wouldn't be so sure. It seems Bell is starting to do this when they switch you form Bell home phone to teksavvy home phone.

It just happened to me, I was on a 6meg profile and they switched me to a f'n 3meg profile when they hooked up my teksavvy phone.

They have been putting switchees on 3Mb/s profiles for at least a year. Same thing happened to me when I switched to TSI almost a year ago.

This may be related to the terms of the wholesale tariff. For sure you are not entitled to 6Mb/s. There may wording that BellER interprets to mean that 3Mb/s is the base profile (e.g. that may have been the standard profile when the tariff was originally agreed-to between BellER and CRTC.)

No I am not entitled to a 6Mb/s profile, but 5Mb/s is what I am entitled to, or how about not touching the service at all and just switch the phone over like they are supposed to do.

I do not want to provoke an argument, but where is it written that you (or any other wholesale DSL customer) is "entitled" to 5Mb/s?

Agreed. However if BellER is "entitled" to "adjust" your profile down to 3Mb/s (say, based on some verbiage in the tariff) then as much as it sucks for us when it happens...

Can someone who is more familiar with the details of the wholesale tariff and/or other contractual terms with wholesalers comment, please. If the terms explicitly state 5Mb/s then this is yet another issue for CAIP to take to the CRTC (or the courts.)

Yes, but is that explicitly stated in any of the contracts between BellER and their wholesalers?

It would make no sense if it wasn't stated... You'd see no wholesale customer at 5mbit if it was up to Bell.

If a wholesale customer has a good line capable of the tariffed sync profiles, then Bell must provide it.

Re: profile drop ?

Yet they don't. They default it to 3 and you have to ask your ISP to get bumped up.

Which was exactly my case. They actually dropped me from 4 to 3 when I switched.

"Up to" is explicitly used in the General Tariff 5410 for GAS.

Lite - Residence / De base - Résidence
Up to 512 Kbps downstream / Jusqu'à 512 Kbps en aval C
Up to 512 Kbps upstream / Jusqu'à 512 Kbps en amont

Basic - Residence / Standard – Résidence (Note 3)
Up to 5 Mbps downstream / Jusqu'à 5 Mbps en aval
Up to 800 Kbps upstream / Jusqu'à 800 Kbps en amont

Thank you. So, since there is ample evidence that BellER has been reducing profiles to 3Mb/s without cause for at leats a year, why has not CAIP taken this to the CRTC

Seems like a slam dunk to me.

yeah BUT

Re: profile drop ?

Lets look at Bell's latest reply that was put up on the CRTC website... its covered here:
»Bell Canada agrees to pay Consommateur costs... BUT

Is CAIP, or the ISP's in a position (financially) to bring things up with the CRTC?

As is, and as can be seen in Bells latest reply, Bell has the might to run you into the ground with cost awards, depending on how the CRTC rules.

Do you want to see Bell's legal Bill's coming in your mail box?

Easy to say... F'n expensive to do.

I will try the filter thing as i now have an extra filter. And see if it improves. If not i will post my line stats. How ever those evil bell war lords keep dangling 16meg internet in my face. grrr.

well i doubt it's a profile drop. i switch the filter around and added another one on and voila.

and my dmt results for those interested. Not sure if it's good or not.

Re: profile drop ?

Your stats look very good, especially for 45dB attenuation.

However, it's only 12 seconds of sync uptime, you should take a look after a day or so...

Re: profile drop ?

ugh, i hate doing that as it's a pain in the arse since i can't run dmt without unhooking my modem from the router and then directly connecting it to my computer to do something that takes 5 seconds to run. I really can't be bothered.

You should have no problems, even if the line fluctuates a bit you should be fine.
