New Comcast Digital TV box

Hey guys,

Just called Comcast today to tell them that my remote wasent working for my tv. They told me that they would charge me $25 for a new one and that it would be cheeper for me for them to send me a new cable box for free (which comes with a remote).

Our cable box was a referb when we got it a year ago - so i'm quite excited about getting a new one - perhaps with digital sound out!

So - I was just wondering what the latest normaal (non HD/PVR) boxes are that they are giving out these days and if its simple enough for me to install it myself (guy on phone said it should be).

Cheers guys!

Whatever it is - it has to be better than my current box! It wont be a PVR - just a normal box, unless they mess-up and send us one - in which case I would be happy

You can't just go to your local office and get a new remote? Just go there and say my remote doesn't work, they'll give you a new remote, done.

If you don't live near an office, then I guess this doesn't work though.

Nah - I looked at the map and its a bit of a trek.

New box+remote is being DHL'd to me as we speak though

At the very least, I'm hoping they might accidentally send me a HD box - although we watch all the HD shows using the co-axe cable straight out the wall so it doesn't really matter I guess...

You really aren't watching HD if using the coax to tv, unless you have a digital quam tuner on the tv or HD box.

I must have a digital quam tuner then... At least the info button on my remote tells me my display is set to 1080...

urgh..

Those mailed boxes don't work half the time. The other half the time they get messed up when initializing them over the phone with a Comcast rep.

Doesn't sounds too good...

Is there a particular kind of box that they mail out? Will it be better than my Scientific-Atlanta which came from the Ark?

Check that.

You're in a Cisco/SA area? I don't know how those are, I speak only for Motorola boxes mailed out.

Not too sure sure what you mean by Cisco/SA area...

If it helps, I'm in Atlanta, GA

Are your cable boxes Scientific Atlanta/Cisco or Motorola branded?

Then I can't help you, sorry.

MadMANN knows a lot about SA boxes, and I'm sure a few others do as well. They can help you

I've found that the reps are the ones who don't know how to properly get them working. It just requires a few cold power cycles and a few hits, and they start working.

The DCH boxes are more sensitive..

More than a few techs told me that if a DCH is hit or something goes wrong you have to swap it out.

That's true, but you have to play around with it and the system. I've been able to recover some of them over the phone by having the person power cycle them 4-5 times, and me reinitializing them, then hitting them.
