| Help with Hard Drive Decisions
Last night my External Hard Drive just crashed. It's a Seagate 160GB and has a case and power unit. Can I buy an internal HD and install it in ths Seagate case? I thought it might fit somwhat like an HD in a case, but want to ask before I start taking it a part. |

| Your question suggests that you bought the external HD as a turn key unit and not assembling it yourself.
Make sure you can take out the old HD from the unit first b4 buying anything.
Make sure its size (2.5 or 3.5) and the interface (IDE or SATA). -- I used to be indecisive, now I am not sure. |

| You're correct. This was a Seagate, plug and play. From your comments, you think if I buy the correct size and interface, it might work?
I guess I will try to open the case and remove the HD. Then check with the local computer store (Fry's) to see if they can match it for me.
If this works, what a hoot! |

| Take the HD out without breaking the enclosure unit , post the model # of HD so that we can confirm what kind of HD to get. These days, HD is dirt cheap, you don't have to settle for the same one, a 500 GB is sub $100.00.
I wouldn't buy at FRY's or any retail store and pay retail price for it, order it from newegg or mwave can save you some money. -- I used to be indecisive, now I am not sure. |

The case uses 4 special socket type screw-heads. So over the next 2-3 days, I'm going to try and discover the secret tool. Without that tool, I can't open the case. I already know that allen wrenchs and smaller flat head screw drivers don't work. If I can open this case, I will certainly seek your guidance. |

| If the "holes" on the screw head looks hexgonal, it can open by hex key. »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hex_key
Otherwise, it is likely to be torx. »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torx -- I used to be indecisive, now I am not sure. |
