| [hard drive] Old HD question.
I've got a really old HD (Maxtor 2F030L0) that I know is well past its prime (by three or more years), however, it just started acting up over the last few hours.
On starting up the PC, the drive isn't detected by BIOS. And during post, I thought I heard that drive squeak (is that possible?)
So what I did was boot up to a knoppix live cd.
Knoppix agreed that the primary master wasnt found. I was about ready to ditch the whole drive already, but thought about picking up any possibly important files I might have lying on the Desktop folder of my windows partition, so I rebooted again (despite the fact that I knew that boot drive wasnt working anymore).
Surprise, surprise. The master was found, booted and is working fine. Has been working for the last couple of hours now. I've moved files to my data drive, and the master was responding pretty well no stalls, no hiccups, and no corrupted files.
So I guess my question is this - should I give this drive a good wipe and throw it out? This drive of mine outlasted a few barracudas already, so it's always been a dependable drive. Or is it doing what its doing because it's just time for it to take a break in that great, big clean-room up in the sky? -- Windows? It's a pack of instant noodles. Convenient, but not very healthy.
Linux? Well, linux is the kitchen. |

| Although you never know for sure...I can not see any possible advantage to utilize a suspect hard drive, be it new or old. IMHO, once they are no longer reliable, it is time to send 'em to that big magnetic platter in the sky... -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? |

| reply to armitage Few months ago my computer would not boot and after a few unsuccessful OS installs purchased a new HD, was relieved it was not a power supply or motherboard issues...whew
I agree what peteC2 said or use it as 2nd HD in the system for software applications/misc storage and not important data save files. |

| after a bit more twiddling with the setup, I found that the drive is still working just fine... but it can only be seen as the slave drive.
anyway, taking your advise for now, I've pulled out every file I needed from that drive, and switched it around. all it has now is the swap partition for my slackware install, as well as a spare partition for when I feel bored and want to try another linux.
I'll probably buy another drive over the weekend and ditch this one, so it can finally rest in peace after so many years of great performance. |
