[Need Info] Does an anti-virus 'scanner only' exist for XPsp3?

Bizarre question I know, but every one I've used installs some kind of background checker. AVG was close, I could disable its background programs in a 'friendly' way, but I'm looking for one that works with Windows XP service pack 3, which AVG doesn't specifically list. Used AVG 7.x before, does 8.x (free) allow full disable of background programs? Just want a decent file virus-scanner for XPsp3, really don't want the 'super-security'. My philosophy is that it is better to be proactive than reactive, and slightly paranoid otherwise. Please don't judge -my- philosophy, as I'm quite satisfied with it-- tia!
Oh, I've tried the web scanners--what a pain! (takes WAY too long for a single file scan)

Do you mean you want only email scans? Or only manual scans?

You might try Avast!

Thanks for your responses so far.
I have tried Avast and it is exactly NOT what I'm after. (It installed pieces that ran in the background, and was terrible at uninstalling itself.
I'm looking at ClamWin--anyone that can verify no background processes and uninstallability [sic] on this one?

edit: answer to earlier question: manual scans only

Exaspery has a pretty decent on-demand scanner. You download the whole thing to update it. After it runs it un-installs itself.

Well, ClamWin seems to be compatible--and just about what I'm looking for. I couldn't find a built-in option to disable the system tray (currentversion/run) piece of it, but after unchecking it in autoruns, it hasn't come back.
Thanks everyone for your input!

I have been using Avira Anti-Virus Premium for a few months now and couldn't be happier. It may be what you are looking for as it lets you pick and choose exactly which components to install, is very light weight on system resources and does a full system scan on my PC (150gb WD Raptor X and a 750gb Seagate 7200rpm) in 25 minutes.

Same thought here...... have used it before and it is only an on demand scanner not resident, it can be installed and ran on demand with other real time resident AVs installed.

You can consider running a free online scanner from XBlock which is compatible with xp service pack3. This online scanner was developed in partnership with FaceTime Security Labs, makers of X-Cleaner Spyware Remover. It scans for all supported "adwares" and many of the "spywares", keyloggers, and trojans that the downloadable trial version of X-Cleaner also targets. Have you tried something like AVZ? It is a part of Kaspersky now, but as a stand alone tool, quite good. You can find a download in this link.
