? Best ISP in Montreal?

So the question is.............................Colba.net, Acanac, Cogeco & all ....Who is the best ISP in Montreal?

This is for ISP only, not for your phone.

I've been shopping around and found out they all have something +or-. I mean...One has poor service, another is cheap but is not perfect...So So
So...Do you have One that you could refer to me as you would to your best friend?
Thanks a whole lot

Since you understand that no ISP is strong at every area of service. Without a criteria as what weights the most, you are in fact pre-empting any suggestion.

Re: ? Best ISP in Montreal?

Cogeco doesn't service Montreal, and Colba is one of the worst ISPs on the planet. If those are your only three choices, Acanac is all that's left.

If you're considering others, there are tons of good DSL ISPs. TekSavvy, Velcom, ElectronicBox, etc.

Cogeco does service some parts of Montreal, but most of the city is serviced by Videotron. That's what I had when I lived in Montreal. Videotron was alright, but I'd stick with DSL in Montreal.

Re: ? Best ISP in Montreal?

By sticking with DSL, You mean that regular phone lines are still better than cable?

On the same token...I met with a tech from bell near Mont-Tremblant Quebec, where it is surrounded by forests and mountains. They've installed new towers to receive cell signals lately and the Optic Fiber is almost complete where we don't even can get the cable.

Wonder if the OF will drastically make changes.

Cogeco does not service ANY part of Montreal at all. The only cable provider are Vidéotron and VDN in small area. Idon't know what service you had then but it was NOT cogeco since it's no where near Montreal.

I have a friend two blocks away from my home with TekSavvy and he is very happy (I'm not that happy with Acanac, working to solve lag issues affecting VoIP and gaming).

If money is not the main priority (at least during the first year), TekSavvy sounds as one of the best around.

I've been using Acanac for 20 days now, and I live in Ste-Dorothee (Laval). So far connections speeds has been stable 24/7 and the exact same speed I was getting with Bell (4347/673). I highly recommend Acanac, it's so cheap and no other ISP provide the free extra features.

·Acanac

i'm with Acanac for the last 4 month and an active member of the community forum, I don't have any problem whatsoever with there service, it depends on the distance from the CO and your line, just remember that the special offer is only for the first year, if you pay the whole year with a credit card.

After the year end you will be automaticaly renew on your credit card for the whole year at regular price 33.95$ month plus 8$ a month if you need a dry loop. If after the first year you want to renew on a month to month basic or if you don't want to renew, you should call Acanac and tell them the week before your years is over. So keep track of your billing date if you don't want any surprise at the end of the year. You can find additionnal information in here: »community.acanac.com/Acanac/

I'm using Electronic Box, before I was using AEI which wasn't bad unless you have an issue.

Teksavvy has MLPPP enabled which is something I wish EB would have already :/

The shasta is the edge router (LNS) that terminate all adsl (GAS/HSA) connections.

OK OK I'll be patient. As long as I get to test.

Just because I bitched about EB in public, just to redeem myself, you should try their VOIP offering*!

Just check out their great reviews

On a side note, the digital phone quality is superb for this type of service and i believe price is set right.

As an EB customer for 2 years, I've been very satified with their network. The main complain I have is about their price and that they do not have usenet servers.

Im new to ACANAC and so far im satisfied by the speed. However it seems to disconnected fairly often and the torrent are a bit slow too. So ive tried to set up a static IP and to foward a port but it no help. My experience with setting up router is limited however.

VIF = Fast if you stay under 50 GB per 15 days.
An automatic "SoftCap" (trust me, it's slow when under this SoftCap) is enabled if your past 15 days give a total above 50 GB.

Why go for Vif when it costs the same as all the other ISPs, and you get more bandwidth from the other ISPs?

Re: ? Best ISP in Montreal?

$58.45 for 100GB cap? No thanks. The speed isn't bad for the price, but the cap is a deal killer.

It's a bit cheaper than Videotron's 10mbit service with the same cap ($64.90), though. It's not a bad offering, just the bandwidth isn't great.

videotronguy: They list prices for with/without TV service, so I'm pretty sure they offer it without.

oh ok

ah ok, thanks. I wasn't sure because someone else mentioned in another topic that they called and they had to get both services.
So hmmm.

So they will sell it alone for sure?

$53.45/MONTH

Not combined with MAXTV
$58.45/MONTH

yeah and

@videotron.ca

Yes VDN is an option in some parts of Montreal/Vill-Marie/Alexis-Neon area (maybe more).

I heard you have to take their TV in order to get their fiber internet. Not sure about this though.. If you get it let us know.

I recall a couple of non-throttle ISP's in Montreal on this list: »Re: ISP's that don't throttle and have their own equipment. LIST
If you spot one that interests you, best to ask about them in this topic.

Also, the topic of this discussion says "Best ISP in Montreal?" best does not equal less expensive.

Probably the BEST in quality and speed in Montreal is videotron's 1-year contract on unlimited unthrottled internet for under 70$/month. You have to pay about 45$ to get a business number from the gov though in order to qualify. Since videotron will ask you for a business number.

I think i will get more than 10/1 though (maybe 10/2-3). since im so damn close to their datacenter thingy.

let us know

If you get it let us know how it is. I only seen very few people on this (2 or 3) but they said it was worth it.

Not much info on vdn...

If it really is fibre to the home, and depending on the particular tech they're using, distance shouldn't matter so much.

Re: ? Best ISP in Montreal?

I have a few Swedish friends and they all have 10/10 from BBB. One of them lives close to the data center and he gets ~70/70 whilst the 2 others are not so close and they get 10/10.

I'm just worried about the 100GB cap.

Re: ? Best ISP in Montreal?

Well VIF has 7mbps/800kbps cable for $30 per month, but a ridiculous 20GB/10GB cap on that service, as well as $50-$100 activation fees.

They're a pretty good ISP, (as long as you don't go over the cap, which never happened to me) downtimes are rare (the service died only three times for a few hours during the last two years if I remember correctly)

But I might consider Teksavvy as I just recently heard about them while searching for cheaper alternatives to Rogers and Bell for POTS. They're the same price before taxes, but the cap is higher and there's no provincial sales tax.

Isn't Teksavvy a bit expensive comparing to Colbanet and Acanac? They all provide great bandwidth and Acanac has many interesting features... And what about the TV channels from colbanet also...

Am I wrong?

Acanac's regular pricing is $34/mth. Colba's regular pricing is $35/mth. TekSavvy's regular pricing is $30/mth. I'm not seeing your point. TekSavvy is cheaper than either.

The reason that VIF's cable offering is so poor is because the CRTC made the TPIA tariffs that govern wholesaler access to cable networks extremely weighted towards the cableco. They're allowed to do usage-based-billing (setting caps on the wholesalers' usage even though the wholesalers pay for the bandwidth per-megabit), and the base pricing is so high that it's difficult for wholesalers to even match the cableco's own pricing, let alone beat it.

Just one thing, the acanac price is for unlimited and you have to pay for the whole year in advance if you want month to month payment it's around 40$. What about the Tecksavvy price is it for the 200gig up and down or for the unlimited?

Re: ? Best ISP in Montreal?

TekSavvy's $30 price is for the 200GB, although you can get $27 prepaid (and they'll refund the remainder as if you paid $30 per month if you cancel).

TekSavvy's unlimited service is $40/mth, but it's not such a clear comparison; if 200GB is more than somebody uses, the distinction between unlimited and capped is largely irrelevant. There's also considering the lowest available cost. If an ISP only offers unlimited, but charges more, then you may be paying for something you don't need.
