Re: ? Best ISP in Montreal?

Still no cable in MTL with reasonable price and cap combo? Yes, it's so bad that I'll even go for a cap but with a reasonable price

Well VIF has 7mbps/800kbps cable for $30 per month, but a ridiculous 20GB/10GB cap on that service, as well as $50-$100 activation fees.

They're a pretty good ISP, (as long as you don't go over the cap, which never happened to me) downtimes are rare (the service died only three times for a few hours during the last two years if I remember correctly)

But I might consider Teksavvy as I just recently heard about them while searching for cheaper alternatives to Rogers and Bell for POTS. They're the same price before taxes, but the cap is higher and there's no provincial sales tax.

The reason that VIF's cable offering is so poor is because the CRTC made the TPIA tariffs that govern wholesaler access to cable networks extremely weighted towards the cableco. They're allowed to do usage-based-billing (setting caps on the wholesalers' usage even though the wholesalers pay for the bandwidth per-megabit), and the base pricing is so high that it's difficult for wholesalers to even match the cableco's own pricing, let alone beat it.

Hi.
Isn't Teksavvy a bit expensive comparing to Colbanet and Acanac? They all provide great bandwidth and Acanac has many interesting features... And what about the TV channels from colbanet also...

Am I wrong?

Pete

Acanac's regular pricing is $34/mth. Colba's regular pricing is $35/mth. TekSavvy's regular pricing is $30/mth. I'm not seeing your point. TekSavvy is cheaper than either.

Just one thing, the acanac price is for unlimited and you have to pay for the whole year in advance if you want month to month payment it's around 40$. What about the Tecksavvy price is it for the 200gig up and down or for the unlimited?

TekSavvy's $30 price is for the 200GB, although you can get $27 prepaid (and they'll refund the remainder as if you paid $30 per month if you cancel).

TekSavvy's unlimited service is $40/mth, but it's not such a clear comparison; if 200GB is more than somebody uses, the distinction between unlimited and capped is largely irrelevant. There's also considering the lowest available cost. If an ISP only offers unlimited, but charges more, then you may be paying for something you don't need.

Good evening my friends.

Yes you’re right Guspaz but considering all the perks you get with the two others and their VOIP service is also cheaper....

Does someone in here has some kind of sheet/data comparison chart so we can compare them side by side.

IE;

TekSavvy's unlimited service is $40/mth.
Acanac's regular pricing is $34/mth.
Colba's regular pricing is $35/mth.

What about the perks?

Online PC
100GB of online storage
10 Mb web space…

And what about

Voice over IP$?

And Finally

Activation cost $
And Modem $

Thanks, that be a great help for a start.

I know these datas are only helpfull to an extent point because from there, we have to weight also the quality of their service, again depending where you live and so on...

Is there anything else we have to consider?

Thanks all

Pete

I can speak for Acanac: the modem deposit is 49.95 but you can use your own, there's an free online to get past the throttling, pc the storage. There no activation fee and yes they are distance dependant, if you need a dry loop is 8$/month. As for the Voip, i don't have it, you can have info about it on their website, some people experience problem with it and some don't. The 34$/month is if you get the service for the whole year, if you want month to month invoice it's around the same price than teksavvy, Since i was with teksavvy before i can say that they are giving a great teck support, i had to call them more than once because of problem on Bell side, as for Acanac i never had any problem with their tech support. And they are both at the mercy of Bell, so yes some poeple had problem with their service but name me one company where no one had any problem.

Hope this helps.

If you're first time DSL or need unlimited, then you absolutely should take advantage of the special deal at Acanac for only $18.95/mont (tax included), 1 year prepaid... There is no other ISP cheaper than that...

There is no activation fee, you can buy a good modem less than $50 at »www.caneris.com/Hardware?t=P or use the free Acanac modem (need deposit $50, you will get back this money when you return Acanac modem).

Since Acanac have 30 days money back guarantee, it is very good for those first time DSL users to test/check DSL is good enough at your home location... With this you can try DSL for free... Is there any other ISPs offer this? None...

Just remember your Acanac activation date, if next year before the contract end... and you don't like the normal higher price... you can cancel and switch to different ISP... If you use less than 200GB/month then you can consider TekSavvy... If you need unlimited then probably Velcome $30/month + tax, no contract... or you want to support Acanac then pay $34/month (tax included), 1 year prepaid...

Thanks my friends.

What's bugging me, is to have to pay up front, same with Colba.

May be I can save 50$ should my modem work.

I'll get back to you with my modem specs if you can help.
Pete

Cheap and less expensive do not mean the same.

However I agree with you on it being a "cheap" service.

Good evening my friends.

Yes you’re right Guspaz but considering all the perks you get with the two others and their VOIP service is also cheaper....
Acanac's VoIP service is independent of their DSL service. You can get their VoIP service using any ISP. And there are VoIP services cheaper than Acanac's without the limitations that Acanac puts on theirs (I believe you're not allowed to call more than 50 different numbers in a month or something like that).

Does someone in here has some kind of sheet/data comparison chart so we can compare them side by side.

IE;

TekSavvy's unlimited service is $40/mth.
Acanac's regular pricing is $34/mth.
Colba's regular pricing is $35/mth.
First, a note, Acanac's regular month-to-month pricing is $40/mth, not $34/mth.

But do you need more than 200GB/mth? Because if you don't, there's no point paying extra for unlimited. Another thing to consider are dryloop costs. TekSavvy handles those fees at-cost (passing on the exact charge Bell gives them). Acanac does an average and charges $8 (which is either more or less than TekSavvy depending on where you live). I'm not sure what Colba's dryloop fee is. But I suggest avoiding that company at all costs, when I was with them they seemed little more than a scam (I never got working service). I'm told they've improved, but I remain skeptical.

What about the perks?

Online PC
100GB of online storage
10 Mb web space…
The "Online PC" is in reality a VPS. It costs $36/mth or more. You can get it from them regardless of what ISP you're on, you don't need to be an Acanac customer. It's not that bad a deal, although you can get a better deal elsewhere, including from Acanac's own hosting division, Canaca (where you get 2-4x the bandwidth for a similar price)

The online storage is neat, although I don't know much about it.

The 10MB of web space is mostly useless, as with that kind of size you're better off just hosting it yourself or signing up for free web hosting.

And what about

Voice over IP$?
Your ISP is irrelevant to what VoIP provider you choose. Barring those that don't do VoIP over the net (like Videotron), you can get any VoIP provider with any ISP.

And Finally

Activation cost $
And Modem $
Activation costs are set by Bell, and should be similar (or identical) with all ISPs (since the ISPs are paying the same thing to Bell). I don't know what Acanac charges for activation charges, but I suspect they're similar to TekSavvy's activation charge ($20 on a dry loop, no charge on a wet loop).

You can buy a modem anywhere. TekSavvy overcharges on theirs, but Caneris will sell you one starting at $40 (»caneris.com/hardware)

I know these datas are only helpfull to an extent point because from there, we have to weight also the quality of their service, again depending where you live and so on...
Your location doesn't matter when comparing between companies like Acanac and TekSavvy; they both use Bell's network to get from you to their own network core. And both their network cores are hosted in the same building in Toronto.

As you noted, the $18.95 is a first-year-only deal. If you compare it to a $30/mth service, in the long run, Acanac is more expensive. Then again, if you sign up for Acanac for a year for $19/mth and then switch after a year, you're saving money. But then Acanac is losing money because it costs them more than $19 to provide you service (Bell alone charge $20/mth for the line, with other costs on top of that).

On dry loops (which Acanac calls "Naked DSL")? You're certain?
