Causes of 'Work Offline'?

I just did a fresh install of Vista on a family memebers' PC. Installed SP1 and all the current updates.

Often... when opening IE and naving to a site nothing comes up except a box that says "not currently connected to the internet, Work Offline or Try Again".

I click 'try again' and the page comes up. This is sort of happening with Live mail as well. It's not sending/recieving unless you force it by Send/Recieve and then this WorkOffline/TryAgain dialog comes up.

The Network icon is always available with the "planet". I can ping the router. Messenger is active/online.

She's on TWC cable with a Vonage adapter as the router. I did power cycle the equipment and verified the settngs. They are all fine (and this wasn't an issue until I just re-installed).

I checked the LAN settings in IE and there is no proxy, The Auto Detect settings were unchecked. SO I checked that and the problem seems to have subsided a bit. It is not coming up as frequently.

I have seen this before on my machine... years ago. A fresh install corrected it. This is just weird that it's happening after actually doing a fresh install.

Any ideas?

Oh... I have also tried to "reset" the browser. And it still comes up when trying yo go to the MS site to choose the search and Phishing Filter....

Slow response from the network, perhaps.

Does your router perhaps only connect PPPoE on demand? That would introduce an initial delay, perhaps enough to fool the application that it was getting no response.

Also, try the following:

IE > Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings > then "toggle" "Automatically detect settings"

For instance, if "Automatically detect settings" is not checked, try checking it. If it is already checked try unchecking it.

I initially did this. It was not checked... and I checked it.
Which seems to have made it "better" because its not as consistent. Perhaps I should go back and uncheck it.

(Requires remote access... so I'll have to do it later...)

Try un-checking it again.

BTW, are there any events in the Event Viewer that may be related?
