| [Outlook] PST HELP!
Hey gang, got a real doozie here.
Person brings me his system, his Outlook will not open due to corrupt PST file, and it tells you to run the inbox repair tool.
The PST file is over the 2GB limit, which in my readings causes havok with Outlook, and the inbox repair tool will not be able to repair the file.
What I've done so far:
I've tried Ontrack's Outlook repair feature, and it fails. I've tried the PST2GB.exe tool from MS to truncate the PST file to below the 2GB size. This feature works, but again, when you try to run the inbox repair tool, (the next step) it bombs and tells you an error occurred. Fatal Error: 80040818 - the entire log is too long to post here.
Is this file beyond repair? I'd love to pull this one out for the guy, but it's just not looking good.

| reply to captokita I've never had any luck with the MS tools.
The last time I had this problem, I bought this: »www.recovermails.com/pst-recovery.html
and it recovered all my mail. (It did not recover the contacts successfully, but that wasn't important enough to me.) | | izy Premium,MVM join:2000-09-21 Naples, FL | reply to captokita Which version of Outlook? | said by izy :Which version of Outlook? Was it an upgrade? Try importing the pst to another PC, same issue? Office 2000. I was never able to completely recover it, but I got the majority of it, so he was happy. Just to let you all know what I did:
I ran the MS tool to "hack" the extra size to below the 2GB limit, I made it 1.8GB or so. Then ran the inbox repair tool again, and this time, it found a ton of errors and said it could fix them, so I told it to. The tool finished, I copied the PST back to the Outlook folder, and Outlook DID start. (slowly, due to the PST size, but it DID start) From here my goal was to eliminate what I could to make the file smaller. However, while I could create a new storage folder, it would not let me move anything from the outlook.pst file to anything else. Error after error. No go.
So what I did was create a new user on the system, opened outlook to make a fresh outlook.pst file, and tried to import data from the damaged pst file to this one. SOME data copied over, but most did not. I then renamed the damaged pst file, copied the new one to it's location, and started again. Success. From here I browsed the folders imported, and found the contacts buried within a folder, but they were all messed up. I had names and email addys, but the addresses were listed under the "Webpage" entry in the contact. Go figure.
So now his pst file is a mere 100MB, appears to have all the contacts, and he's happy. Convoluted to resolve, but in the end, I got what I could out of it.
Thanks for the help, I'll note the links for future reference. | |
