It's going to cost more than a regular HD TV since it's got a bunch of stuff built in. As far as costing 8k I doubt that as in that case its more practical to buy a better tv and just get an Apple TV to plug into it. -- Ricky Smith

beaups join:2003-08-11 Hilliard, OH | reply to SteveLV702 That's a terribly ignorant comment...and very "matter of fact" for something that is still pure speculation.
Let's move on to FACTS: Look at apple's GM vs Panasonic's and Samsung's. Apple is used to making MUCH higher margins than those that exist in the HDTV space. Don't you think Wall Street would have a FIT if they shrink margins.
Look at PC's...much higher margins than their competitors...and much higher retail prices to go along with it. |
|
 | reply to SteveLV702 ignorant comment how so? people say Apple is over priced just because they don't offer that many systems so just seems that way but if you actually breakdown their systems and compare with other manufacturers spec for spec they will be just about the same price...
A month ago I read a company who did a study on it I will try to find the link again but each time sony came out more expensive by atleast $200 |
|
beaups join:2003-08-11 Hilliard, OH | The comment is ignorant because you (and I) have absolutely no idea how much these sets will cost. With no information available on the cost, any statement regarding the cost is "ignorant".
I'd like to see the PC link you mention. |

| reply to beaups I think the real issue is that Apple wants to become a big mover and shaker in VOD and PPV, the way they have with Music and iTunes.
The cost of the TV's isn't the big deal, they are thinking of the profits from everyone pulling down movies and video from iTunes.
Basically, it's like the Video games model. Sell the console for relatively cheap, but make $$$ on the backend with the content. -- "Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power." -- Benito Mussolini

Can you please show me a single display that costs the same, or less than an Apple Cinema Display? I'm going to assume you do know the meaning of 'comparable', as you used it several times in your statement.
Also, please use MSRP prices. I don't care how much you can buy a (heavily depreciated) one for on ebay. For reference, the MSRP for the Cinema Displays are listed below.

20" Samsung ($330): »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···24001282
Pluses for Apple 20": Better viewing angle 2 Firewire ports A bit smaller in overall size
Pluses for Samsung: Better contract ratio Better refresh (assuming the 5ms should be 10ms total) Lower power consumption Built in TV tuner HDMI connector 3-year warranty 3W speakers (maybe)
That seems "comparable" to me. |

beaups join:2003-08-11 Hilliard, OH | you are forgetting about costs, which drive the margins that apple will not be able to compete with.
For Example:
the dell has a dealer cost of just over $1100 the apple has a dealer cost of just over $1600
While the apple is made out of aluminum, the Dell has a few tricks up it's sleeve as well. Apple's dealer cost is nearly 50% higher than the Dell... |

Obviously, you'll never agree anything is "comparable" to Apple, since you think Apple is the best and will make any excuse to prove it.
