| [ TV] Compression impacts plain digital TV
Watching the game on CBOT for a while tonight (Ott vs Det) and there was definite movement smearing. Switched to CBMT for the Tor vs Mtl game (don't say anything - the ACC must smell awful bad tonight) and the compression artefacts were just HORRIBLE ... it was like watching a lot of the crappy movies on youtube! And this is on a decent CRT TV with comb filter.
We're paying for this kind of service? |

I wonder if Bell's or Starchoice's compression is better. |

| reply to sbrook Hey guys - I feel your pain :-( Unfortunatly those things are not all Rogers fault. Max compression used on SD is 1 to 12 and HD 1 to 3, where 1 to 2 is applayed in most cases. There is sipmly test to do if you know how to bring up diagnostic screen on your digi. On pg.4 or 5 you can find : Tuner info. If all the values are shawn as white we good. And wery importent thing - corrected and uncor. blks. If those are close to 0 and not greater than 1000 it means that signal is clean and box doesn't need to request corrapted packets. I other words - if the pic. looks bad it is in most likely source problem not Rogers. For exeple there is long lasting problem with HD-ABC - not solved yet b/c Ted Rogers is not owner of ABC

| reply to sbrook Well, CBC is not ABC
CBOTs HNIC feed into Rogers Fallowfield from the Corel Centre showed no significant problems with fuzzy pixels (what you see with compression), although there is slight smearing.
CBMTs HNIC feed into Rogers Fallowfield from the ACC showed definite fuzzy pixels from compression. I can't imagine that the feed from the ACC to the CBC was compressed beyond the norm. I can't imagine the CBC feed between Toronto and Montreal would be compressed further. Therefore, the compression would be on the Rogers haul of CBMT from Montreal to Ottawa.
For compression to show on SD service with an SD receiver shows pretty poor service quality! |
