There is no reason the carriers could NOT move customers towards e-mail is the WANTED TO. At the rates they bill SMS it is MORE profitable to keep offering SMS than e-mail. Bandwidth is easier to shape and increase as the transport is generic and not tied to a propriatary infrastructure.

The current billing rates are PURE greed. I vote for content providers barring delivery to Verizon.
